Render: Geometry flickering (but looks fine in viewport) ??? (H17)

My geometry in the render flickers as if a cache problem is occurring for the scene. Yet the simulation looks perfectly fine in the viewport. Any rendering turns out to a flickering mess (see attached video render).

I have no idea why this is happening. It's just a simple destruction scene with some basic materials. What's going on?

The strangest part is that I simulated and rendered this all on one computer - no render farm. So I have no idea how caching could have caused a problem if that is what is going on.

try saving to disk as bgeo, reading back in via file sop & rendering that instead.
