Extruding Beziers from Illustrator vs. Font SOP

I'm running into some particular weirdness when trying to use the Extrude SOP (not PolyExtrude) on some beziers imported from Illustrator. I'm using the same font in the Font SOP and in Illustrator (Garamond). When I try to Extrude the imported EPS, I get some strange artifacts around specific areas, and I don't get these artifacts when using the Font SOP.

I'm trying to come up with a consistent way to process these vector files since most typographers aren't going to want to do their typesetting in Houdini, but I'm not sure exactly what the source of these artifacts is. It seems to happen regardless of the cross-section curve I use for the second input into the Extrude SOP.

I'm attaching an image of the artifact below… again, the same letterform coming out of the Font SOP as beziers doesn't have this issue. Any leads?
