How would you approach it? I have tried several techniques but no success…

Fluid sim? Check out Entagma, I think you should be able to get some guidance from their tutorials:

Yeah! definitely it looks like advection by volumes, but the tricky part seems the sourcing of the particles, I don't get the logic behind it. I mean, where is the sourcing happening? seems at the edges of the volume maybe?
