I just purchased a Nvidia Quadro FX 1000. I was wondering if there is any thing special I need to set up or will it work well with Houdini on its own. I noticed there are selective options for other 3D apps.

I have a Quadro FX 1000. It works quite well with Houdini as is. The main thing is to make sure you have a “good” driver version. The ODWiki over at ODforce has a page on drivers with Houdini issues:
