Just to hype it up and to not make you guys sleep in the next days:

Talk Houdini 19 Reveal on Mon Oct 18 from 18:00-20:00 CET
Talk Karma XPU, MaterialX, & Vellum Grains in Houdini 19 on Tue Oct 19 from 09:00-10:00 CET
Talk Using Vellum Fluids & Crowd Updates in Houdini 19 on Tue Oct 19 from 10:15-11:15 CET

From VIEW conference program

Let's hope they took Karma and USD out of isolation from within the Solaris context. That would be sorely disappointing if they didn't. Solaris is only useful to a select few.

Heard of GPU and CPU, but what the heck is XPU?

XPU is an ability of renderengine to use either, or sometimes both at the same time
see renderman or cycles

I was excited for the kinefx and muscle updates, but seeing vellum fluids and karma XPU makes giddy. This will be the best update since vellum was introduced for me. And hopefully Karma and usd will become usable outside of Solaris, but if Karma is feature complete and faster than mantra then I'll be happy as well. I want to move from Redshift after the whole c4d and subscription fiasco.
Also in laymen terms think of XPU combining CPU and GPU to give greater function.

Being a major version bump to 19, should bode well for Karma. I'm excited to see how far they pushed it.

Somethings are very difficult on GPU, while other things are easier on CPU, so maybe this XPU approach, will target the best hardware for the job?

Dont get to excited about XPU. It is incredibly complex to develop, plus it need loads of VRAM to be utilised. So keep your expectations low. We probably gonna see first iteration of it which will be super buggy, but hey once done right, its gonna be a blast.

Gah, next week can't come soon enough! I used to get excited about new episodes of a TV show or video games... now it's 3D apps. :P

Sooner or later Solaris might replace obj (more or less).
So if USD and MaterialX work like envisioned we „maybe kind of“ finally get more independence.
Working together with colleagues using whatever app they love to work with and content that stays up to date inside Solaris (hasslefree) with assets/content looking faithful to the original is kind of nice. Does it work out or are things just to diverse for one universal standard?! Interesting to see how things move on :-)

Already have a 5950x with 64GB ram, might update to 128gb, but the darn graphics cards are still too expensive at the moment, damn you, bitcoin miners, damn you all to silicon hell!

Yeah, it`s a gigantic mess, right from the start. It`s actually the second time I`m into Bitcoin hell. First time was almost four years ago when I built my former system with a 1070Ti inside. One of the fans didn`t spin, I returned it to the dealer, but instead of sending a new one or fixing the fan I just got a refund, right when prices sky rocketed due to shitcoin!! It took 6 months until the price was where it was when I bought it, my brother loaned me his 1060 in the meantime. But this time it was worse. The MSRP prices Nvidia projected were never met even by a light year. RTX 3080 for 700 bucks - my a$$!! I was about to wait until december if needed, so I can deduct the expenses this year, but seeing how the crap is getting more expensive again after a slight reduction I finally just did it. Didn´t want to end in a dead end when Blender CyclesX or Karma XPU finally arrives. As the situation looks like, this insanity may go on for another year or two, who effing knows. The world has gone mad, burning precious high tech devices and power for a highly volatile fake currency...which mind blowing things you could create or at least experiences you could make with that technology...

MSRP for an RTX 3060 is 330 USD, it sells at 800 USD on Newegg, can’t even find decent used cards at decent prices on Ebay, unless you want a burnt out miner's card, and even then, those are hard to find, all I got now is a crummy GTX 1650 4 GB VRAM, and I don't see the day when I will be able to upgrade to a decent card, not at these prices anyway!

if we could select multiple parms so you can easily write the same thing in one go, that alone could be a biigg improvement in UIX. just saying. And if you add the ability to use some kind of "increment variables" (?) something like point(0, "P", $N) and let the software fill 1 for the first selected parm, 2 for the second one and so on. Man, i would piss myself if you guys implement something like that. Just the ability to lock multiple parms in one go is a HUGEEEE improvement. there is a lot of repetitive writing/clicking in houdini rigth now. Sidefx needs a UIX team ASAP
