...workflows that don’t change with every release :-)
While it can be frustrating and difficult to keep up, this is one of the things that attracted me to H. I'd much rather work with software where the authors will do this, than be locked into a poor or out of date workflow with the excuse 'we couldn't possibly change it, it's fifteen years of muscle memory you know...'
Mid-level features and building blocks...
I thought these were called 'Shelf tools' : )
Advanced parameters that are hidden under advanced options, in general, hide complexity...
Houdini is all about power and flexibility - that's what users get on board for. It would be very frustrating if that was 'hidden away'.
Yes, there's lot of UI / UX matters that can be improved, and I do agree with Luke and Brians's comments about documentation, naming, depreciated nodes and workflows etc. The whole USD / Mtlx side of things is clunky, but I think that will continue to improve over time.
Having said this, it's great to see some welcome UI/UX improvements in H20 - a good example being the new 'Create HDA' dialogue which is just as powerful as the 19.5 version - but much easier to use and understand. More of the same please.

Thanks for the useful comparison Yader. Would you be willing to share that Redshift demo scene - just to make sure all settings are the same - I'd like to run it with my 5950x / 2x 3090 rig.

One thing that I think could be done, that would help those at the more 'artist' end of the spectrum would be the creation of some complementary examples in the content library - perhaps marked 'simple example'.
The 'lol bubbles' and 'billowy cloud generator' are perhaps two good cases.
Bubbles: 5 to 10 bubbles, perhaps with an animated clip SOP so the viewer can see and understand the geometry structure.
No textures, no background cove, no lights - just plain geometry and sticky notes.
Simple billowy cloud: just one cloud. The network runs through the basic geometry, volume and noise nodes with notes. Again no textures, lights etc, just visualised VDB.
These would probably take no more than 5 mins each to set up. Opening a project with significant network complexity or one requiring multiple cache rebuilds isn't friendly to a new or more artistically oriented user.

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
I've read threads over the last few days that might be summarised as:
The artist end of the spectrum: H20 is too **** complex, we need simpler and more artist friendly tools!
The VFX TD end of the spectrum: What's in H20 for us? We need more VFX control and power!
It must be tough being a developer : )

Yes - with all due respect to Esther who did the APEX presentation - my honest feeling it was far too technical and assumed far too much base knowledge. I certainly need something that explains the core concept from a ground-zero level, and I suspect I'm not alone.

Frankly I agree. Can the above scenario be solved? Yes, of course. Pretty much any geometry manipulation can be done in H : )
Should it be an easy one drag direct-edit-with-snap operation? Yes it should!
I've submitted various snapping RFE's (Request for Enhancement) myself and all I can do is suggest you do the same.
I've no idea what workarounds support has suggested for the above, but I've attached one of my own : )
As an aside, if you want to focus on direct modelling in H you might want to explore / consider this:

If only it was that easy : ) Your example doesn't, unfortunately, reflect the original posters request.
Download the file I offered above: boolean seam_snap.hiplc
Delete boolean1 and edit1.
Now see if you can snap point 3 to the intersection of the vertical edge it lies on with the inclined plane.
Please let us know how if you succeed : )

While there will probably be some image enhancements...
I just wanted to post to say 'thanks' for all the very useful and interesting info you've posted in this thread!
...and while I'm here I'm going to take the opportunity to bring up 'the gnomon issue' again. See: https://www.sidefx.com/forum/topic/87788/ [www.sidefx.com] and https://www.sidefx.com/forum/topic/92736/. [www.sidefx.com] I really wish that Sidefx could put more attention and resources to improving these sort of UI matters. While they may seem 'minor matters' they become 'major irritants' when you need to use them many times each day...

If I'm understanding correctly, I think boolean set to 'seam' mode would give you the reference points you need. You could then point snap to the generated points.
I do agree that H's snapping could do with a serious upgrade. File your 'Request for Enhancement' (RFE) here: Bugs and RFE submissions [www.sidefx.com]
The more that ask, the more likely it is to be delivered.

Is it possible to change the selection tool default settings (obj/geometry context)?
Specifically: I'd like to change the default box selection to brush selection, and set "Select visible geometry only" to on.

We also rewrote the part of the viewer that monitors and updates SOPs to get rid of all the ghost and missing geometry bugs; this is live whether you're running Vulkan or not. This should be a big improvement to everyday workflows.
That is such good news : )

Seems ass backwards to me. Couldn't they have inverted the logic and had a checkbox for 'Round corners'?

That could only be Houdini...
Sharpen Edge Boundaries to round them
Add SOP to remove geometry
and now in H20 - quoted from the sneak peak video... "Ability to sharpen heightfields with Heightfield Blur"
You couldn't make it up.
