What is $HIP and $JOB? Learn about that and how to create and set projects inside Houdini, for better organization of your geometry, HDA, textures, renders, etc., per project. Then, we will double-check that we have all connected files for our project, using Pre-Flight Scene.

    Very nice!

So the actual project file is just loose in the project directory? Everything else has a directory, why not the scene file?

Cant find the "use Map" option.

Yes, this tutorial would have to be revised. This is an older version of Houdini. If I'm not mistaken, the settings are summarized in the principled shader.

Edit: Create a node called Material Network. Dive into that node. Go to the Tools menu on the top of the Node Editor and choose "Show Tool Palette". On the left you could choose Tools > Shaders > Classic Shader or you can use the filter at the bottom to search for “Classic Shader”.

He could tell you where to find the "testgeometry_squab_object1", otherwise how are we supposed to have a "SquabScene" file to open etc. I eventually found the squab using TAB > Test Geometry > Squab but it already has a material applied so bit tricky following along adding material when it already has one. I could delete the material but being a complete noob I'd probably stuff something up & end up with squab everywhere....squab BBQ time then;-)

Turns out the "testgeometry_squab_object" comes in 3 versions (files) - easy, medium & hard? Easy has no texture/material so now I'm supposed to work out how to use this squab to add materials & save in Project files to follow along with this tutorial? Really need to update tutorials for Houndini 16.5.

And it would be good if you could edit your comments to fix spelling mistakes....Houndini....lol.

Ok, this video sucks. Where are we supposed to get the squabscene file from in the first place. What kind of teacher starts a tutorial without providing the proper resources to begin with. My squab object is locked etc & has 3 files you can switch between plus it is referenced to some weird location not $HOME but ${OS}_SSS.pc which makes following along with this tutorial a joke really. Hope the rest of the Absolute Basics tutorials are better than this or it will make learning Houdini as an apprentice even more challenging.

Yep tutorial needs to be updated for 17.

To follow the project... add a squab... Click c > Create > Test Geometry > Squab and then select Easy (or uncheck Add Shader on Medium or Hard)

Impossible to follow. Surely, I can create a squab but cannot do any modifications with it as all of the nodes are locked... Would be really helpful to keep tutorials up to date.

this video is too fast, I cannot follow it, I can create a squab, but I cannot find the mantra surface, I use houdini 16 mac.
