SideFX is pleased to announce that students now have direct access to rent Houdini Education for personal use. Until now, students could use the FREE Houdini Apprentice at home then use Houdini Education in a school lab. Now students can rent Houdini Education for $75 USD per year.
Access to this license lets students avoid the Apprentice restrictions while working with the same file formats that are used in school labs. This license is non-commercial and is designed for students completing independent educational coursework and exploration.
Access to Houdini Education is available to all students, even if your school doesn’t currently teach Houdini. When acquiring the license, the Proxi.ID verification service will be used to confirm your academic status. With this change, many more students have the opportunity to learn Houdini and benefit from the Education license’s extended capabilities.
Houdini Education removes the render watermark and resolution restrictions of Apprentice. It allows for the export of FBX and Alembic files and lets you run Houdini Engine plug-ins in host applications such as Maya, 3ds Max, Unreal and Unity. Both Houdini Education and Houdini Apprentice use the same Scene file [.hipnc] and Digital Asset [.hdanc] file formats.
How would I get verified as a student?

Does this mean that students no longer have access to the FREE Houdini Apprentice?
Houdini Apprentice is still available to everyone, including students, for FREE. This new Houdini Education offering is just for verified students from any school.
What if I am using Houdini Indie as a student?
Houdini Indie has all the capabilities of Houdini Education and allows you to use the license to do paid work up to $100K USD. Indie does use a different file format (.hiplc/.hdalc) which means that files you work on at school cannot be used in Houdini Indie.
Can I switch from Indie to Houdini Education and get refunded the difference in price?
No, it is not possible to switch during an existing rental. Once your Houdini Indie license expires, then you can make the switch.
What if my school would like to purchase multiple licenses for students?
Please have a staff/faculty member Contact our SideFX Education team, and someone will follow up shortly. If your curriculum is delivered online, we recommend that you share this link with your students so that they can rent and install their own Houdini Education licenses.
