Good morning,

I have embossed text on a grid which was created in VOPSOP, but as soon as i assigned a material to it, the embossed text completely disappeared.

Initially thought having both Point and Primitive Cd attribute were confusing Houdini, tried to delete them which didn't help. Tried changing between Point/Primitive Attributes at “Material SOP”, no good either. Is the shader overwriting the network in VOPSOP or am i missing something?

I'll be happy for any help, hip file attached!

there is no material in your file and I cannot replicate your problem
applying clay material behaves as expected
it is very likely that you are applying material without any light shading like constant material

Lighting model on your lighting2_brown VOP node in shader is set to constant, that's why you don't see the text inside, change it to lambertian or other to see something

Darn, that's fast… i examined the rendered image which did not work, probably difficult for a less experience person to figure the problem out by eye. Will keep this in mind, thanks for the time!
