HI ,
With a name like Volume ramp I would expect a nice ramp of color
.if I plug in a SDF or fog volume and turn on color ramp > adjust the colors, the volume in the viewport remains white. Likewise if I change the volume name say to Cd the Cd.x ,Cd.y, Cd.z values should get picked up by the volume shader , but nothing does. Can anyone explain how this sop is supposed to work.

In the help it says
“To generate a color field that will be understood by Mantra, set New Name to “Cd” to generate Cd.x, Cd.y, and Cd.z volumes that will override the shader’s color value.”
This does not mean it shows up in the viewport, but it will render in color. You need a Volume Visualization to see the ramp in the viewport, put Cd.* in Diffuse Field.
For an SDF you'll need to swap around the source values so that the Max is lower then Min.
