Hello, I'm in my 3rd day struggling with cloth, so I set up a simple example in maya similar to what I need in the end, and it behaves gracefuly, it simulates in realtime too.

Maya:

Whereas the same in houdini gets tangled, simulates slow, and any parameter I adjust won't help me get closer to maya's test.

Houdini:

So could you please help me get closer to it ?

hard to tell as you didn't include your scene

but mostly make sure you are having your cloth in correct scale, usually 1unit = 1m
add some surface mass density if cloth feels too light
you may want to decrease damping and bend stiffness as I find the default too high, but as well depends on material you want to get
play with drag parameters as that defines air resistance of the cloth

here is quick example (13.0.376)

Thanks!

Did you create all the nodes by hand ?

Should I aim to do so too in general ?

it doesn't really matter as long as you understand what's going on in your scene you can use shelf tools and tweak or create nodes manually, I use both, whatever I feel like at the moment, usually what's quicker

this time I did it by hand as I like to create dopnet inside and once it was there adding other 3 nodes was easier than changing display flag, clicking on the shelf tool, selecting object, removing the dopimport, corecting input object path etc.

Ok, thanks.

So I've made some progress but very little. Here the previews speeded up 2x, less boring:

maya:

You can see in the maya one there's that nice flapping wavy motion. Can you help me achieve that in H ? Here I attach the scene.

Sorry, I had to let this go for a couple of days because of work.

This page is supposed to explain how to add wind and drag, but I can't figure it out:

Can you help me with this?

add a wind node at the bottom of the simulation,
add some noise.

in the cloth object there is a secction for the drag. here is where you can play with the parameters

Thanks, but that page in the help files says we shouldn't use dop nodes, instead use the vel attribute, right ?

So I wonder, how to do that ?

ahh…. then you need a multi solver with a sop solver in it.
there is a file in one of the post on the forum on how to do that on the cloth. dont remeber where in that file it show how to do the set up.
