Hi everyone, I'm thinking of buying an amd gpu (Rx 7900 xtx) but I'm not entirely sure if it's a good idea or I'd rather opt for an rtx, which do you think is the best option?

No, not if you plan on using Houdini's built-in GPU renderer, karma XPU, as it only supports RTX cards for now. It could support AMD in the future though. If not using a GPU renderer then it might work fine for you.

Definitely check the supported card list as not all RTX cards are supported in Houdini general. For example some notebook versions like RTX2060maxQ are definitely not supported.

So after 20 years of wait, materialX and USD is step forward but we are still dependant on the GPU hardware, there is no universal open CL code which could satisfy multiple GPU alternatives?

It's a pity for an engine which has been started "recently" we can not have something already GPU hardware agnostic.
