What about FBX import? Did you try export fbx file from 3dstudio and import it into Houdini?

Of course it does - it's parent company(autodesk) is behind the standard.

And besides - there is always this:

FBX Converter
Transfer project data from one application to another quickly and easily with the FBX Converter. This utility lets you convert OBJ, DXF™ and 3DS files to and from the FBX file format. Available for Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Or you can export to obj. Houdini imports obj pretty well. Ever since Autodesk purchased Maya, Max has the ability to export to obj natively. In my case (I still use Max6) I have to use a free plugin that's available here:

Or, you can export to 3ds, open it in Silo, and resave as OBJ. The Silo trial will still work as a format converter after the trial period:

Just checked and even Max6 has FBX exporting option. I just exported an interior from max and imported it into Houdini and it loaded just fine. Materials are a bit crazy, but they can be improved within Houdini.

Curious if anyone has any formulas or equations for double checking camera data when doing this.

We are finding our FBX files imported into Houdini don't always have the exact right camera data. This is partly making sure ALL the right Max data is transferred, but if there is more specific conversions anyone knows of it would help.

For example, the same way there are maya to houdini camera conversion equations.
