Font problems

Hello. I have downloaded and installed Houdini Apprentice 11 half an hour ago and have ever since tried to solve a very weird font problem. It has never happened to me in previous Houdini versions.
Also, since I have to manually install the license, it is impossible to read my server details and continue.
I have tried to reinstall the default fonts in my computer (using the Windows repair tool), but nothing worked yet.
Even IF i somehow manage to install the license, I'm afraid that the font issue will exist in the program's interface, therefore making it almost impossible to work with.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks - it's a known issue with non-workstation graphics cards.

Hi, this is houdini-11.0.460-win32-vc8 just after starting adn Ctrl+Clicking on Sphere tool. Except problems with fonts you can see that the sphere is shifted from the origin and “crashed”.

Windows XP Professional x32 bit
OpenGL Renderer: Radeon X1600/X1650 Series
OpenGL Version: 2.1.8545 Release
Driver Version 6.14.10.6925
Adapter RAM 256,00 MB

Houdini-10 works well on this system.

I've been able to reproduce the problem but not fix it yet. When it is fixed, it'll appear in the Houdini 11 journal, here [sidefx.com].

Hello, I'm using Houdini on a laptop with a ATI Radeon Mobile HD 4330 and works very good, also realtime shading is good.

Yep, any OpenGL 3.0-capable ATI card should be free of these problems. It's only the OpenGL 2.0 and lower cards that appear to be affected. It looks like the culprit is a very poorly implemented GL_ARB_texture_non_power_two extension, which I'll be manually disabling for the OpenGL2 ATI cards (X1x00 series, X800/600/300). This should be fixed for tomorrow's build.

Thank you, twod! And taking an opportunity, I want to ask you, as the developer. Whether the Font node will sometime support Cyrillic (Russian) fonts? Or it is the big problem demanding change of the architecture of the program?

If you have a true-type Cyrillic font, you should be able to import that font into Houdini. Click the “Start Font Manager” on the Font SOP, and choose File->Install Specific Font. That should make it available to Houdini.

Note that while 11.0.469 fixes the font and viewport issues listed here, the following issues are still outstanding with ATI DX9 hardware:

- Area and Environment lights with HQ Lighting do not work currently
- Shadows do not work (do not appear)
- Omni-light shadows currently crash Houdini

The root of the issue is the use of loops in the shaders, which ATI DX9 hardware does not appear to support. I'll see if some of these functions can be partially restored, or disabled.

It seems, I have not absolutely correctly asked a question About Cyrillic font. I have no problem with importing that font into Houdini. Problem in that I cannot enter non-English characters. When I switch input language on my keyboard to Russian and try to input any symbol into Text field of the Font node, all parameter fields flashes with red and input is not carried out. I even tried to copy the text from the Notepad - without results. I think that this problem needs to be solved because it does impossible use Font node for not English-speaking users.
