Hi folks,
I'm using Hqueue to launch python job on a render farm. I was wondering if there is any way to implement a “time out” variable for these jobs ? If the rendering time goes above this time out, the job would be killed.
I didn't find a clue on the documentation
Cheers,
G.

Hi guys,
I used Hqueue at work on a small farm ( 3 nodes only ) and mostly to launch python jobs and I find that yes, with big jobs ( a lot of frames ) it can be quite slow to submit job …
And the parent / child job relationship is quite tricky as well, there is not clear dependence between 2 different jobs, you have to use one job and create children job on that particular job, which is sometimes what you don't want.
As far as I know there is no way you can link 2 jobs with a parent / child relationship easily.
For simple tasks, Hqueue is a perfect tool, with a great python API, for big farms and complex jobs, I wouldn't go for it …

Technical Discussion » Hqueue => hython and otls

Hello,
I'm having an issue with Hqueue and otls. I try to send a simple command job like that one => hython %HQROOT%/path/to/scrip.py
inside script.py, I just create a custom OTL node with hou.node(“obj/”).createNode(“MyOtl”)
It says “Invalid node type name” like it can't find any custom otls ???
I'm assuming ot comes from a wrong houdini.env value so where should I setup the HOUDINI_OTLSCAN_PATH properly on my client machine ?
Thanks

Technical Discussion » houdini command line load hip file

Hi all !
I'm trying to access to an hip file through an external python script by importing the hou module. It works ok but I have a bug when I try to access to the nodes in the file.
in my script I have :
(there is a “obj/geo” node in my foo.hip)
hou.hipFile.load(“foo.hip”)
n=hou.node(“/obj/geo”)
n.parm(“tx”).set(1)
And i've got an error because hou.node(“/obj/geo”) returns a null !
But if I do:
hou.hipFile.load(“foo.hip”)
n=hou.node(“/obj”)
children = n.children()
I have my geo node in children !
it seems that hou.node() doesn't work with anything else that /obj ??
I work with eclipse with Hython as interpreter, houdini 13.0.414.
Of course it works fine in houdini directly.
Any idea on that ?
Thanks,
G

Technical Discussion » Save UV to file and python ?

Hi all,
I'm looking for a python ( or Hscript actually ) method in order to save the UVs of a mesh in a file, a bit like the hou.geometry.saveToFile() we have to save a mesh in a file.
Any idea ? I can't find it in the doc…
Thanks,
G

I had a similar problem not so long ago, and actually I did a cutom python node which list all your selected prims, then all points in these prims (find prims() then vertices() then points() )
Then save all that in a list of points for each prims, then compare points for each prims and if points are found in common then merge prims into a group …
But I'm quite sure there is something to do with that hou.GeometrySelection.connectivity() yes

Technical Discussion » Group primitive groups if not connected ?

Sorry if I'm not clear I need to have the less groups I can in a object for further treatments.
I split my object into groups with the partition node then I want to “optimize” these groups by merging eachother if they don't share edges ( or points, actually ).
As you can see in that example ( pic I've attached ), red lignes are “cut” edges.
It works with a custom ptyhon node, just wondering if there was an easier way to do it with regular node.
Partition didn't help for merging groups, just to create them, but maybe I used it in the wrong way
Cheers,
G

I've found something using python, comparing point from each groups … It should work ! But if someone has a easier way with houdini nodes i'd take it

Thanks guys, but actually I want to merge groups together if they don't share edges in common (It's more the way I should've explained it I think). Like it's the case for grp3 and grp2 for instance.
I've used the partition / connectivity sop in order to create my groups, but I need to have less different groups now ( does that make sense ? )

Hi Everybody,
I've got a problem with groups and can't find how to solve it. The idea is, I need to group differents groups of prim only if they're not connected to each other.
For instance in the picture I've attached, I'd like to group together in a new group grp1 and grp4 and another on with grp3 and grp4 etc…
I wanted to find something with prim/vertex attributes and a for each node but I'm really stucked on that… any help or thoughts much appreciated
Thanks !

Thanks but actually I want the node not in Bypass mode, but I'd just like that when I select that node it's not cooked

Hi !
I'm working on a quite heavy scene and I've noticed when I select a node with display or template flags off houdini still cooks it to show a “thumbnail” of the node in the viewport.
On heavy scenes it's quite annoying Is there a was to change that behavior ? Can't find it in the preferences but maybe I'm missing something !
Cheers !

Hiya,
I have a wee issue with grouping primitives. I have a single mesh ( it comes from an .obj ), with multiple “sub-objects” in it, just connected primitives. I can do a group for each connected primitives with conectivity and partition SOP. But I need to create a group per groups which are intersecting or not far from each other ( with a radius value or something ).
You can see the problem in the screengrab I've attached. I'd like to have group 1-2-3-4 in groupA, 5-6 in GroupC and 7 in Group B.
I'm trying something with a for each node and intersecting vopsop node, but I'm a bit lost, anyone could help me on that ?
Thanks !

Technical Discussion » inputAncestors() python ?

Hi,
I try to put in a list all node of a netword connected to another node, so I use inputAncestors() but if I have a subnet connected to the node ( for instance, an color sop ) the fonction will return all nodes inside this subnet too, so I try to use follow_subnets = False but that will give me the same result, in fact, I have the same result no matter if I use follow_subnet = False or True ot nothing…
Any idea ? i'm on H12.0.543.9
Thanks a lot by advance
Example :
current_node = hou.node(“.”)
inputs_list = list( current_node.inputAncestors(follow_subnets = False) )

slowest rendered on the market?
I don't think so, no… the point is that you have to tweak a little bit more your rendering param than other engine, that's all…
Mantra is very different than others don't try to use mantra like you'd use MR or Vray (Thankfully, I'd say…) and read the help
