In my case, I'm not instancing anything. But I do have about 40 digital assets in the scene, that come from an older version on Houdini, each with their own SHOP network. I can read ‘evaluation python cooking op /obj/myobject/myshopnet/material1/surfaceOutput’. Do you know of a way to see more info when soho is doing is thing?

I do get the same thing sometimes. Not sure what it is. Is there a way to log what's going on? Mantra logging doesn't show anything as this is happening when hitting ‘render’ but before the mantra process starts.

Hi,
Just tested ^mybundle in the ‘force phantom’ field of a render node, to declare everything but the bundle to be phantom but that didn't work.
Other things I've tried:
* ^mybundle
when editing the expression in a smart bundle as /obj/* ^/obj/myphantomobject/*, houdini keeps on processing but never returns.
Bug?
RFE: allow an ‘ends with’ regular expressions such that I can do something like: /obj/myobject/$ meaning: this object only, without it's children.
Regards,
Dries.

This is fantastic news. I've been waiting for a houdini file that gets loaded on startup to set the environment like a job dependent HOUDINI_PATH. It means on linux, I can use the desktop menu to launch Houdini without a wrapper script or without logging in and out. It finally means using the default install method and things work immediately. I know you can always DIY it, but for a desktop application, I simply shouldn't need to fiddle with the command line to get it to do what I want.
Now that I get to think about it again, what even would be more fab is that the HOUDINI_PATH wouldn't be an env variable but a houdini variable. That would mean we can change the HOUDINI_PATH from within houdini, and AFAIK this is n't currently possible.
Thank you SESI.

I managed to get 1 combination working for me: H8.1 for windows, with Mark's 1.0.0 for windows plugin from here: http://www.digitalcinemaarts.com/dev/real_flow/download.html [digitalcinemaarts.com]

I gave it a try but ran into 64-bit issues I think. Mark offered to work on it, so I'm sure we'll get something soon.

I had a try at compiling and it compiled on my amd64 machine, but the plugin doesn't seem to work any longer. The SOP says: Not a Real Flow Particle file. Any clues as to how to fix it?
I used RealFlow 4.2.3.0102 and saved the particles as .bin
Turned on debugging and I get:
SOP_RF_Import::disableParms() myFileType: 0
disableParms() - changed: 18
SOP_RF_Import::disableParms() myFileType: 0
disableParms() - changed: 18
cookMySop() - myFileType = 0
myFileNameUsers/dries/scenes/testforimport/particles/Square0100047.bin
Reading Real Flow particle header record
part_header.verify_code = 6175715300fabada
part_header.fluid_name = re01
part_header.version = 16256
part_header.scene_scale = 1.12104e-44
part_header.fluid_type = 1070106761
part_header.elapsed_time = 6.5861e-44
part_header.frame_number = 30
part_header.fps = 3000
part_header.num_particles = 1036831951
part_header.radius = 5435.21
SOP_RF_Import::disableParms() myFileType: 0
disableParms() - changed: 18
the part_header.verify_code is incorrect as I should be getting: 0x00FABADA
Help.
I used CH_STRING_LITERAL in all the error that came up. Is this correct?

Houdini Lounge » Displacement or bump, how to easily switch between the two

Since you sent me this hip file Andrew, I've got another question:
Why is it that when turning true displacement for raytracing on, I can still see some ‘squares’ on the sphere. Like little patches. I can lessen that by turning up pixel samples, but even with 10x10 they don't completely disappear. I don't see them when using micropolygon (true displacement). I've added a displacement bound property as well, but even on 20 the patches don't go away.

Excellent! And what a fast reply!

What is the best way to switch displacement off and just use bumping in H9?
Say I've prepared a displacement shader, and I've put that together with a surface shader in a material. Can I then make the displacement behave as bump or do I have to copy the vex nodes into the surface shader and connect to N before the lighting? Wouldn't it be nice if you could decide only later to use bumping rather then displacing? Is there a property that needs to be set maybe? A toggle like “Don't really to displace, fake it with bump”?
Tell me what your approach is.
thanks,
Dries.

edwardI have to further investigate, but my impression was that when hserver is started up as root, mantra running as a different user, was unable to connect. It could totally be the setup I tried it on, privileges probably. I'll let you know.
Mind you, I don't see why you can't just install hserver on snake and have it start automatically whenever the machine starts up.

ah, thanks, It's called ‘Cycle Handle Mode’ in hotkey manager. I thought that was to do with ‘handles’ but that might be H8 ghosting in my mind.

Is there a shortcut for cycling through these viewport options? I've been looking in the hotkey manager, but nothing related to this functions comes up.

Hey Steven, on linux, how is hserver started? When I use -H localhost, everything works as expected, but when I try -H snake, I get mantra: Network Error Unable to contact remote hserver
That's obviously because hserver isn't running on the host snake. When I start hserver on snake manually, everything works.
My question is: can I start hserver on remote hosts automatically when using mantra -H, or do I always have to log in and start it manually? Mind you, what login to the remote host and start mantra (without -H option) then hserver gets running automatically.
I would have thought that running hserver -h snake would start it, but that gives me: Existing server found at localhost:1714, it doesn't start hserver on snake.
I would love to know the mechanism for this.

Thanks guys. I was trying to get channels from Max into Houdini. I used the asset on exchange and it kind of worked. Something went wrong with the chrefit thing, but I that's probably something that can be solved since with a simple wave CHOP everything worked as expected.
I have the feeling that chrefit doesn't work if there is only 1 sample at frame 1 or something. I'll look into that further.
Thanks for the directions.
