Houdini Indie and Apprentice » using texture map with transparency...

ok… for the moment I applied alpha map separately in mantra shader and took out pass, composited and delivered this short project. Didn't have time for r&d. Anyway, glad you have shown your concern on the issue…

hi, I am using a tif file with transparency saved as texture in principledShader. This is showing well in viewports with desired transparency(snapshot.jpg). However I cannot render it as such (check the attached snaps outAlpha_1 and outCol_1). Rather the whole grid is rendering.
I am attaching the houdini file. Someone plz reply fast… thanx… I am using these things in my project.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » transferring attributes from box to particles in new popnet

yes sopsolver is doing the trick.
First the whole node tree was confusing. I was unable to understand how three paths were leading into the same “wire_pops_into_here” thing. Also how the sop solver was acting simultaneously… had to watch some tutorials on new particle system to understand what you achieved.
thanks awong

hi, I was following first steps tutorials on sidefx site by Ari Danesh ….
M06 - First Steps - Understanding Attributes & Variables
https://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2186&Itemid=361 [sidefx.com]
He has shown a way how colors from box can be transferred to particles from SOP box and then forces be applied on the particles based on their color. plz check snapshots 01 and 02.
However in H14, new popnet doesn't allow attributeTransfer node. So the question is how to bring attributes from sop to the new popnet… Anyone plz show how to. I am attaching houdini file so Masters of Houdini can quickly sort out this mess.
thanks

Also the alternative provided by aizatulin is working grt.

… thanks… they say it right: Help will always be given at this forum to those who ask for it.
1. Jeff, I tried to append divide sop but doesn't seem to work well with raysop. Getting good results with twist… but not with raysop. Yeah, being at a beginners stage, i might be going wrong somewhere.
2. As suggested by blackpixel, I tried his clean up node with my raysop network and everything works fine… looking great in viewport as well as renders out well. Whether I append polyextrude later or even when its used before raysop.
I am trying to understand in bits what you did at cleanup (attributeVOP), still if you can elaborate it, shall be of good help for beginners like me. thanks

hi, a very beginner level question…
i am trying to create a logo with text shaped like being projected onto a torus.
1. used ray sop to project a grid onto a torus
2. used lattice to shape font with grid onto torus
However as i extrude the font then, i get weird results like these.
Kindly anyone suggest where am i going wrong.

Thanks unhiding vopsop is working with the command…
But noway…. won't go back to h13. Now that vopsop is a history, being a beginner, let me experiment with wranglers and vex; even if it takes time to explore, i hope shall be good for me in the long run.
However I do feel houdini has been a little unkind to people like us who are new to this software. They should have allowed a little time for masters to enlighten beginners with appropriate tutorials before making the newer methods mandatory.
Also a word of advice for beginners… experiment with apprentice version first, for months and years and don't get tempted to buy h14 indie version as I did.

Yes… thanks for the help.
I have been replicating (and understanding somewhat) effects of a few such tutorials with attributevop instead of vopsop.
However, with the limited knowledge of mine regarding this software, i fail to understand how setattribute will help me in case I need one in future. say, for example can i plug in Cd in setattribute instead of geometryvopoutput.
As i am going through some of the msgs in this forum, I am finding guys asking to use bind/setattribute and likewise. Can you help me understand with some examples what these are (or where can i find suitable tutorials or how can i explore the subject).

hi,
i am new to houdini… as i was trying my hands at vopsop found it is no more available in h14 indie. This makes many tutorials like this one https://vimeo.com/95644892 [vimeo.com] and many other on youtube and vimeo redundant.
anyone out here on this forum, kindly suggest how a beginner like me should experiment with particles with such obsolete tutorials. Now that vopsop is gone, what approach should i take to make effects like the one shown in the link. Should i use attributevop instead and how to? no tutorials as of now… video/html to show new approach which houdini14 expects.
