Hello all,
Im having trouble with selecting the primitives in both the front and back of a poly model. I have front/back selections set to f/b, I marquee my model but the back half remains unselected. What am I missing?
Also, I just want to confirm that I'm doing the following in most efficient manner. When I need to remove a row of edges and points from a poly model, I must first dissolve the edges, then blast the points. Is this the BEST way.
Thanks in advance.

So, to remove, lets say, an edge loop from a model, you must first dissolve the edges, then blast the points. This is how I understand it.
Has anyone come up with a better method?
And by the way, Dries. How come you didnt take that girl home with you?

Jason, you're right about the lack of options for brush selection. I believe part of the problem lies with its being too literally a brush tool.
In my fantasy land:
Once in “brush selection” mode, the cursor is “live”. When any part of a chosen component type within the bounds of the visible and scalable radius, is passed over by your cursor, that component should turn a color (like a rollover) as indication that it can be selected by a left mouse click. By holding down the left mouse and “brushing” you should be able to gather multiple components into your selection. I feel that this would be more elegant and practical for face and edge selection. Oh, and middle mouse on the tool button to bring up a radius ladder.

David,
I've been through that same problem. It is of course a paths problem.
I finally figured it out after adding to and adjusting my system's environment variables and paths for a day or 2.
My best suggestion would be to make absolutely sure that RDC is working properly on its own, then deal with shaderman's path requirements. Otherwise your head WILL explode.
However, once you get shaderman working properly, it is a dream come true.
Hopefully by now, your problem is resolved. If not, let me know.
I might be able to remember how I got it to work, hehe.

Well betty,
I completey missed the soft xform sop. Thank you for pointing that out. Works like a charm.
Also, regarding selections. The paint selections tool isnt doing it for ya?

Hi betty,
All that and the magnet tool would be nice.
You're right about time consuming. However, now that i've gone Houdini, I can never go back.
I agree completely.
Bevel sop and selection tools, thats my christmas list.
well this is another thing that's missing edgeloop and edgering selection, (….not to mention shrink selection + a whole lot more..).

Excellent models. Is the car nurbs or sub-d?
I've encountered that brand of aliasing problem before. Also in a space scene. I've had success in battling that using brazil with outrageous sampling settings and LOTS of time. However I'd be screwed if it was anything but a short shot.

There is no edge and corner vertex mitering. Thats the key.
Oh boy do I agree!
In my experience with facial modeling for example, I will frequently select a continuous loop of edges around my model's mouth and bevel them in a global mode to create additional edge loops. This ends up looking a bit like the Orbicularis muscle structure around the mouth. I do similar edge beveling all over my model and I believe working like this is crucial for most modelers. I've been doing this in houdini using the split poly SOP and it takes much more time and effort to get it right.
Anyhow, if anyone has suggestions on using the existing tools more efficiently here, let me know please.
I must say though, that even lacking a tool for beveling edges, Houdini is the best and most flexible modeler going. The interface is as elegant as it gets in this business.

I'm not part of a large post facility. Basically, I do it all myself. I've got 2 systems on my oversized desk here and I jump apps like you wouldn't believe. I'm in after effects on one system with photoshop minimized and I'm pulling verts in a 3d app on the other system and it's usually 3am before my eyes get too bugged to work. My point being that I could not afford to switch to linux because all my tools need to be right there at all times. Deadlines rule my life.
As far as I can tell, Houdini works wonderfully on win2k. Just as reliably and smoothly as the other apps I use. But of course I hadn't played much with COPs till after installing 5.5.197.

Actually David, renderman isnt that tough to use. All you need is a command line to launch a render. As far as configuring shaders you can use a great free app called shaderman that lets you build shader networks much like houdini. Shaderman gives you a swatch on each tile in the tree so you know what you're creating at every stage. And with Houdini Master, you have a complete renderman GUI right there. Much more flexible than Brazil. However, those brazil renders are yummy.

Wow david, that sounds bad. I don't know which ver you are running, but after I installed 5.5.197, I saw your post. Since I've never tried the rotospline COP I wanted to see if I could replicate your problem on my windows 2k system. I am actually amazed at the fluidity and responsiveness with which the bezier handles manipulate, and how nicely the points move about when editing my path. I tried adding a new point and it does what it should, first try, smoothly. I too use combustion and AE5 as well as Flame for comping on a regular basis and I understand your frustration, but these splines whip the pants off of AE5 by a long shot. Actually no comparison. Also, they feel much more polished than the combustion splines. You've got to get the newest build, or try a reinstall. Also, I was working with the cache for the compositor set to the default 10mb. One suspicion I have about your setup is that your vid card is not up to the task. I know your prejudice against the high priced nvidia pro cards, as was I for some time. However, my latest system purchase came with a quadro 4 w/128mb in its specs so I splurged, and I does make a huge difference! Forget about the “soft quadro” fix. Good luck!

Yes, I've got all the tutorial files, and they are most helpful.
However, the missing files are not included with the tutorial files.
The files im in search of are the EXAMPLE files from the pdf manual under help, not the tutorials. Most OP types have a bunch of files named as examples. If you check each chapter and note the files they refer to, you'll see what I mean. The dir that they should be in is $HFS/demo. I've found a couple of them in the /archive dir on CD 2.
Maybe these files are restricted to paying customers?
Anyhow, I'm greatful for the Apprentice version as is.

If you read the .pdf manuals from the help menu, you will find frequent references to example files. These files are missing. They are not on CD 2 or linked to on the Sidefx site. If anyone knows if, or were they can be found, I'd love to get ahold of them. They seem to be quite a valuable learning resource when you are using the Pdf manual.

Did you get the shading problem solved? I'd love to know what the problem was and the fix. Just for future reference, as I too am working heavily with the sub-Ds in Houdini.
Technical Discussion » Question about selections

Hi all,
I'm still new here and have a question about selections.
Is there a way to select a loop of edges around a model? Other than going around the model and shift clicking all the edges. For a quick example of what I mean. When I use polysplit with the “quadralaterals” option and “closed” checked, I get a loop of new edges around my model. So, lets say later, I need to reselect that “loop”.
BTW, anyone know if us appretices will see the User Guide example files? I'd LOVE to get ahold of them as a learning tool.

Another thing I forgot to mention, since this was a problem that a lot of students here forgot to do first before modeling in Houdini.
In SOP, make sure that you turn off your the Secure Selection (I call it a.k.a “selection lock”) The selection lock is located on the left side of the bar where you'll find the lock icon. The default is on. You can turn this off by default by going to the Preference>Tools>“Sop-Level Secure Selection On by Default”
Oh my goodness. How come this isn't the first thing taught? You've just changed my life.
