Hi Guys,
went to upgrade my 9.5 license to 10. When I go to:
https://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_purchase&Itemid=234&mode=apprenticehd [sidefx.com]
Put in my email address AND Licensing password it tells me - “No Apprentice HD 9.5 license found”
I look in my License Manager and over at http://license.sidefx.com [license.sidefx.com]
Guess what - both have my 9.5 license bought and paid for and expiring in 2037.
Any ideas?
My 9.5 works away fine on my PC, I just cannot purchase the 10 upgrade

Hey Teatime,
Have a look at an app called FXHOME Visionlab Studio at:
www.fxhome.com
The price is cheap enough relatively and it does a good job. I bought this on offer over Christmas, it was reduced by a big %.
cheers

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the reply.
I should preface the following with - all the statements and opinions below are from the perspective of where I live in Ireland. I realise others may weigh in with a slight different opinion if they live in our Capital city - Dublin. Though I think I am on the money for most of this …
Its not what commercial work do I do, its a case of will do. I run a small Web Design / Internet company in Cork City Ireland . Unfortunately - when it comes to 3D and graphics here in this country the commercial audience is quiet conservative. If you go looking for 3D companys here - you will be hard pushed to find them - most work gets farmed out to the UK . Dublin is the center of the Universe in Ireland, everything gets sucked in to that city - even at that their is not a huge amount of 3D companies there.
Finally - education wise - their is not that many … no I should say none - when it comes to professional courses.
I realise you might say - aha an opportunity - I am saying the same, so with that in mind and having used 3D apps personally for the last few years - I am looking at and trying to setup these opportunities here in Cork. I have looked at basic training ideas in community school night courses and all that. Plus via web work trying to look for areas to insert 3D.
Anyway their you have it for the moment. Needless to say I have to keep going with the “conservative” stuff to keep the bread on the table, but I am continuously on the look out for 3D opportunities, though few and far here!
Cheers

Hi Guys,
Maybe being a little cheeky, but I wonder will we ever see a Houdini Foundation type app at around the same price point as XSI Foundation?
http://www.softimage.com/products/foundation/ [softimage.com] - $495
Just to chuck it out there and get hammered in the process
I have the HD edition and am enjoying the ride so far. I should stress that I realise the HD version is open and not watermarked, but is for PERSONAL Work only, not commercial.
Cheers

Hi Dragos,
After I posted that I had that exact thought - maybe your country is not mentioned there.
Would it be worth emailing Robert Magee on this one, if you havent done so:
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=189&Itemid=55 [sidefx.com]
Scroll to end and rmagee@sidefx.com - see if he can bend Digital tutors Ears for you!
I had something similar for ages with XSI here in Ireland. Sent them stinkers of emails about it. When I went to purchase it online, I was able to go through the shop as normal, but at checkout it said - sorry you cannot buy it online - go to the reseller site in Dublin. They then emailed me with an price that was loaded substantially. I refused to buy. Recently they have rectified this, but it stopped me purchasing in the past.
Cheers

Any one tried the e-download option?
Does it work?
RDG: Read my first post again - “Bought the download copy of this today - top stuff.”
And then go here: http://www.specsavers.ie/cgi-bin/strudwick.sh/s?langid=3&pfmt=3&siteid=39&pname=home.html [specsavers.ie]
Had to pop this in - just ribbing you RDG.
digitallysane & RDG: The download version works fine, two file links in your email. Each the content of ONE CD. Download and burn two CD's, pop into drive, autolaunch and off you go.
digitallysane:
Unfortunately Digital Tutors have a very strange policy of choosing the countries they ship for.
Why dont you just buy the download version. No shipping issues I dont think. Of course I am assuming you have decent Broadband. Only difference is NO Box, thats it!

Hi probbins.
Ironically I was looking at this. BUT it seems proceedures have changed since v8. If you attempt these steps now some of the nodes added persist with errors ( the red centre ).
I sent a mail to Miguel to see if an update in proceedure was possible,

Hi Guys,
That classic scene - comet with a trail of smoke and brimstone. Start with a sphere and then particles. Sphere with added transform node for direction, keyframed. How would one best set up a particle stream behind it as it travels from right to left across the screen?
Parenting? Assuming the sphere is the particle source.
Go easy in the explanation and dont assume too much, consider your reply.
Cheers

Hi Andrew,
Yip I mean a tute on the whole process - bones/rigging, skinning and then animating IN HOUDINI. By the latter I mean - yes alot of apps do Character Animation, but each has its own Idiosyncrasies. Things like how best to do a walk cycle in houdini? How best to avoid foot slippage? how the character is best made to react with the floor - so it does not go through the floor while animating.
I see the potential for a project based video tutorial set on the practicalities of Character Animation relevant to Houdini. I dont think such a thing exists yet. This also - as you said to uncover Char Anim in Houdini a bit more, particularly for us relative newbs ( to Houdini, not necessarily 3D ).
Char Anim tools and proceedures are more in focus now, I see this in other apps. I have extensively doodled with such things in recent Blender releases - since the release of the open movie “Elephant Dream”, Blender Char Anim tools in the Action Editor and the NLA have steadily improved to give solid results. Also in general 3D forums people are constantly shouting that XSI is the top app for Char Anim.
Would be nice to see Houdini rowing in here, a good start - some tutes by video me thinks.
As a slight aside I created 5 camtasia vids on rigging, skinning etc in Blender for the MODO community. I was asked. As Modo does not have Char Anim tools YET, one can animate in another app and then import the Char Anim ‘movements’ via .MDD into Modo and apply to the model there. Modo - since v301 - now has timeline. These tutes are at this thread, just as an illustration:
http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=23095 [forums.luxology.com]
Scroll down the page for 5 different vids. All done in about 2-3 hours, no script admittedly, so a few hums and haa's,
Cheers

Hi Probbins,
Yes - this was good to hear from Robert and from you.
By the way - As you see from my Profile Flag I am from Ireland. Cork City on the southern coast only a few miles away from BLARNEY. The legend has it that to kiss the Blarney stone bestows upon you the gift of the gab. All Corkonians are naturally born with this - we talk alot. So - I apologise to all in advance if sometimes my messages are a bit verbose and rambling

Hi Lads,
digitallysane said: “No matter how you put it, it requires a lot of time to learn high-end 3D animation packages. ”
In response to my statement: “The faster and more efficiently I learn, the better in this environment. As they say - in this modern world - time is money.”
Yes - I agree it can take a long time to learn a hi end 3D app, but an organised centralised tutorial / video tutorial repository similar to Luxology.TV would be invaluable and make this process far more agreeable.
I have only used Modo as an illustration of a product who's approach to training/learning - I think - is top notch. I was not comparing - or did not mean to compare it with Houdini head to head.
Luxologys approach is I reckon - a well educated user is a happy user is an ambassador which equals more sales when the word is spread. By organised I mean tutes on all aspects with real examples being used. For example - modelling a simple motor car OR a wheelie bin in Houdini, UVing it, Texturing it, Rendering it. This - so a new user in one tute or group of same can get an idea of workflow. From their will be confident to explore on his/her own.
OK, it has been said above that Houdini can have many solutions to one issue. Houdini is not alone in this. BUT - for the sake of new user / starving artist to grasp Houdini workflow, surely its possible to do an end to end real world type tute with ONE of these solutions?
digitallysane said: “Modo is an app dedicated to only one aspect of the 3D production (or maybe two): modeling and painting. ”
Well - as of version 301 - Modo has the beginnings of Animation - all tools are keyable, blah blah. Expect full character anim in v401. Yes it Models, Paints - but also has top UV Mapping tools ( easiest so far, I have seen, to use ), Sculpting, Rendering ( global illumination and physically-based shading models are available, providing for advanced optical phenomena such as anisotropic blurry reflections, indirect caustics, and subsurface scattering.) Once Char Anim is added it is then a “Full” 3D app.
Re the comment - "it's toolset is very limited“ - look again I suggest. I say this in a light manner digitallsane, trying to be constructive from a new houdini users perspective at this thread. Also I assume all are aware that Modo is a break away from Lightwave. As far as I know Luxology are all ex Newtek. Not a bad pedigree!
Unfortunately or not - The new HD pricing could draw in alot of users who may seem at a ‘lesser’ level than hardened Houdini practisioners. Its priced at a level that would attract Casual Users - the type of user some hardened professionals may look at and go ”ermm!“, turn about and walk off in dispare, muttering ”What will they do to my 3D app" If this - the general 3D casual user - is the wrong audience then a rethink on the HD promotion may need to be done. Though - I think I can only assume it is a promotion to actually widen the user pool of this great 3D application.
I have had this argument with users of another 3D app I use - What we found was that their are Technical type programmer users who make their own plugins/scripts. These guys have a whole different view of an app, more into tinkering under the engine and could dismantle the thing at will. Then their is the more creative/arty user who wouldnt know python and programming and scripting and never will. It is rare to get both user types combined, I have found and sometimes neither can understand the other.
Anyway - now I AM rambling nonsense … I shall stop. I hope Robert, something in all of this makes sense. AND to you hardened Houdini users - I am not dissing your app, as a new user I am giving my two cents from the outside while I am still objective ..
By the way - in case people are going mmm - When I mentioned that time is money in my business. This was a general phrase, I realise Houdini HD is for personal use and thats what I will be using it for. If I like it and come across a commercial use - I will upgrade to Escape.
Cheers
Aidan

Hi Circusmonkey,
We joust again
“If it was easy to learn it would hardly make your acquired skills worth anything in the market place would it !”
Maybe a new breed of user will turn up to Houdini forums now as a result of the Apprentice HD personal offer. Ironically, by its nature, an offer for the starving artist, who maybe purchases this for personal use as opposed to “acquiring skills worth anything in the market place”. Maybe these new users are not as technical as the true blue Houdini user pre this offer.
So you also state:
“Maybe that gives you an idea of the sort of person you need to be and what attitude is required.”
The greatest thing an application can achieve is market share and a rich customer experience while making profit. Sidefx - I assume are in the 3D market to make money. This, to afford the further development of Houdini for all users and hence more profit to keep the great programmers in a job .. and the owners sweet
I work daily with my own web company - I would love to spend all day doing nothing else but 3D and Houdini dedication. BUT - my customers want things yesterday. The faster and more efficiently I learn, the better in this environment. As they say - in this modern world - time is money. Not my choice by the way. Pragmatism.
Cheers

Hi Guys,
Appreciate all the love - some nice tutes. I for one - am coming at this from a stranger arriving at Houdini. I AM NOT KNOCKING HOUDINI, lets get that straight - so all relax
When I arrive at an app I usually see its vast potential first out. Because I am new and objective relative to this app - I see such things as organisation, learning, as an issue. I want to learn - fast and efficiently. Once it is reasonable - cost is not an issue, as one could spend way more time faffing around with dis-organisation on the net as opposed to a focused centre of learning. This is why I brought up the MODO example. With Modo I have stayed at the modo site for learning - WHY - Because everything you need is their - in full technocolour video .
So I have to say - Modo people are spoilt relatively, but it does not stop us from exploring foreign shores and bringing the good news to there. As I said before - yes - Houdini tutes are available, but in a disorganised fashion . All it needs is a centralised approach - some engaging video learning - both paid and unpaid with real world usage examples, in the process.
I wax lyrical, maybe too much,
BUT, my couple of cents at this time,
Cheers

Hi Guys,
Ill preface this message with - bare in mind I am coming at this as a complete newbs set of eyes who see's Houdini as a large complex app. Please keep this in mind in your replies. A bit of objectivity from current users please
I am a complete newb to Houdini also, recently acquired the HD version. All along I have used other apps including mainly - Modo. The way Luxology have done their video tutes is tops. A huge repository of FREE organised up to date tute vids is at Luxology.tv:
http://www.luxology.com/training/ [luxology.com]
With the app download comes a huge batch of short video tutes - one for EACH tool in Modo.
Also their are some excellent and more comprehensive video tutes available for sale. The price typically $25 for the full set of any one topic:
http://www.luxology.com/store/training_materials.aspx [luxology.com]
But you can buy them in parts for $5 each in some cases.
I am saying all this as an example of a well organised and very accessible (price wise) training series of videos.
My two cents as a new comer to Houdini - a similar implementation for Houdini training would go a huge long way to endearing new users to this app. OK - you have version 6 tutes, how fully applicable to v9 are they? I intend looking at these shortly as I have only become aware of them as of here.
Any of the modo tute packs are a start to end solution in the area they deal with, liberally infused with real life example projects. Recently Andy Brown released an excellent “Real time asset and Level creation” video set. How to adjust models for the game industry, uv / texture, Bake and export. These having been done in consultation with actual top gaming companies. Now - I see that as progressive.
Cheers

Hi circusmonkey,
Yes I did this. The thing I will try is to whip out the two 512mb pieces and leave the 2 x 1gb's in slots 1 and 3, then see if this works. Thought I might gain and extra 1gb with the two 512mb's in slots 2 and 4
Cheers
