UPDATE – What is new in Driver version 343.22 is that it completely crashes Houdini if you switch to open Cl and hit play. Will revert to 340 now.
– 340 also crashes. Guess I didn’t hit the play button before.
Anyway no open Cl acceleration on Ubuntu 14.04 for now.

Thank you for the reply, did some googling on the topic and found that this seems to be an Nvidia driver bug affecting only the open Cl computing. It is there since driver version 313. Today I installed version 343.22 and there still is no change. Nobody seems really to be interested in removing this. Guess for now the 6GB of ram on the Titan are a waste. Hope they solve this soon because I am curious how large sims one can run on the GPU.

Hi there,
got me a Titan Black and upgradet from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 everything working fine so far exept that the opencl option for the pyrosolver returns an error. It seems Houdini has problems finding the opencl driver.
I attached the Houdini infotext file. In it it says:
No Configured OpenCL Device
A middelmouse klick over the pyrosolver gives me this:
no opencl platform found (-32)
Opencl Exeption clfinish (-36)
I tried several different Nvidia drivers and different versions of Houdini but the error persists.
The driver I'm running now is the 340 one. Houdini is now the latest daily build which is 521.
Any suggestions would be great.
Cheers

With MartybNz's scene on the k4000:
9.9 fps headlight only
1.8 fps HQ
Great card!!
So what to do? As I get the same results on W7 and Ubuntu with the latest drivers.
A software problem can probably ruled out. Anyway I installed W7 AND Ubuntu completely new ONLY running Houdini 13. Same result.
So it must be a hardware issue.
I already did an RMA on the k4000. Same result.
Tried the card on all slots. Same result.
Ran the System on each CPU seperatly. Same result .
Tested the RAM modules seperately. Same result.
Tried 3 different monitors with differet resolutions. Same result.
It is probably not a Hard Disk related problem so I did not test that.
Just to emphasis this again the card runs fast under Maya and Max. I also did some benchmarks - card runs fine.
This is a problem only related to Houdini and - if I look at Chism' s results - only related to my setup.
Anybody an idea before I do an RMA on the Motherboard?
BTW: The HQ lighting in Houdini 13 looks beauifull and I did a comparison between Mantra and Arnold. – There was absolutely no difference exept Mantra is somewhat slower.
Great update!!!

We're getting around 150-170 fps when tumbling around with that torus/grid scene on our k4000. Not sure what the difference is between our machines, but at this point you should log a bug and provide support with your specs from Help > About Houdini, along with your scene file. Thanks!
4.2 - 3.9 fps which would make your viewport about 40 times faster than mine which makes me doubt that we are running the same test.
Just before I start filing any bug reports, would it be possible for you to confirm that we are testing the same by downloading the attached file and run it on your machine. Maybe I did something really stupid which I am not aware of.
I am testing with GL 3.3 and shadingmode “Smoth Wire Shaded”.
The Hardware is not that bad, it is a dual xeon 5680 workstation overclocked to 4.2 Ghz.

I also had that issue with Realflow which was fixed by Nvidia with the 320.92 drivers. So this is the driver I'm runnig at the moment. I also testet older drivers. The results are all the same. Ubuntu with 319 also same. I even did an RMA on the card to be absolutely sure it is not a hardware problem. I assume the k4000 was not the right choice for Houdini. In Max and Maya it performs well.

Just did the same tests as above with Houdini 13. There is apsolutely no improvement in viewport speed with the k4000. Neither in geometrie not in volumes. Apart from that it looks as if there are some cool new features included.

Good news on GX titan.
I tried again the 16.000.000 poly test and i was averaging 22 fps up to 37 fps..
I tried a sphere with 80.000.000 polygons and i was at 11 fps
what just happened, is it the divers or did you do something to houdini.
just feels so much better
This sounds like good news. Is this in openGl 3.2 and which viewport shading mode do you use?

Sounds like good news for AMD owners.
Could you reproduce the Quadro issue, or should I give up hope and maybe go for a 7970?

twodCool - thanks for doing the tests. It's good to hear. If Nvidia is better we might need to retro-fit the K6000 to the new MacPro!
I wish you luck in that – the dual AMD cards seem pretty custom to the case. But who knows, maybe Nvidia will release a board that fits into the new MP.If possible can you post a file with the 100 separate objects. Not sure what I did wrong but I tried a test file and was getting ~2fps with only 60 objects of 250K polys. Thanks!
Here you go. An AMD 5770 in my mid-2008 MP was running it between 120-140ms (7.1-8.3fps). The GT120 in the same system was a bit slower at 190-210ms (4.8-5.3fps). My Win7 system with the FirePro W8000 was running it at 47ms (21fps) in GL2.
This is using point instancing to draw the data, so it's possible that if you have 100 unique 250K quad grids the GPU would run into memory swapping issues and slow down, which instancing avoids.
Which shading mode did you use to get the 21 fps with the W8000?

Wireframe and the wire-shaded modes use a geometry shader, which seems to substantially affect performance in the case of large models. It's a tradeoff made to improve update performance.
There is a performance improvement for AMD cards and large models in the next major version of Houdini.
Could you give us a hint when that might be ?

Just for curiosity I did some testing with the Quadro. I switched the Houdini viewport to wireframe and get 6.2 fps on the geometry file with 8 million polys. Now I set up the same scene in Maya and 3DS Max. In Maya I get 58 fps and in Max it is 91 fps.
Not that you get that wrong, I consider Houdini by far the best 3D package out there but would of course love to see the same numbers for its viewport.

I already did all this while trying to get the GTX 480 to work properly some time ago  Houdini seams to be very picky on graphic cards.

Just tried to add a null and put the display flag on it, but still the same, 4.6fps.
What you mention sounds to me like limitations affecting the geometry draw times, but would this also explain the reduced performance on pyro effects? Here the GTX is almost 3 times faster.

Hi Twod,
I'm glad someone of the developers takes care of this issue though wonder a bit that you don't have a Quadro k4000 at hand as I thought you are provided by nvidia with the lates hardware for testing.
I just tried to turn of the lighting but there is hardly any difference. The framerate goes from 4.6 to 4.8 on the geometry file. With pyro there is no difference at all.
Cheers

As I had some serious issues with the stability of Houdini with my GTX 480 which persisted through all Drivers and all Houdini builds I decided to update the grafic card.
After going through all the posts which handle graphics and related issues i decided to go for a Quadro k4000, which arrived two days ago. The good news is it seems to run more stable than the GTX 480. The performance though is nothing but disapointment.
On geometry the GTX outperforms the Quadro almost by a factor of two an on volumes it is even worst, it outperforms the Quadro almost by the factor of three. On particles an fluids I did not test because here the GTX would constantly bluescreen my machine.
First I thought there is an issue with the Quadro but after running some benchmarks and testing with other apps I found that it is performing very well. In 3ds Max I get more then twice the speed with the Quadro.
I tested on Windows 7 and on Ubuntu 12.04, the results are the same.
I do not understand how a more than 3 year old gaming card which cost me less then 200.- Euro can can outperform one of the latest workstation graphic card for almost 850.- Euro.
I realy hope I am doing somthing wrong and stupid here and there and that there is a solution I didn´t think about.
Cheers

Hi,
I am trying to get a little bit more serious with flip fluids but if I up the resolution of the sim windows freezes. This happens from about 15.000.000 particles upward. When I disable the visualisation of particles completely Houdini runs rockstable even with 100.000.000 particles!!! But then I am of course completely blind.
Is there a way to display a reduced amount of particles in the viewport?
In Realflow this now is available and it is very handy.
Thanks in advance.
