Hi.
Can houdini be used for polygon reduction or decimation? For instance, say if you wanted to make a mesh be back in a parametric state. Reduce its polygons as if it weren't made editable (but it is still). How could this be done?
Thoughts?

Hola.
Does houdini have the ability to have x,y,z painting, selecting, sculpting, etc? (Like zBrush)?
If so, how or where is this functionality? Or where do I begin?
Also does houdini allow for wacom stylus pressure sensitivity?
Thanks

Hi.
How do I use a texture to fracture any mesh with the voronoi fracture? Does someone have an example network showing this?
Thanks.

Basically I want a polygonal mesh maze that can be stretched (shrinkwrapped) over a sphere or any other mesh. The entire mesh maze also needs to be broken up (fractured) into segments of the bigger mesh maze. I'd like to paint a color over the parts I want to be separated by fracture. In the end the segments can be put back together as one mesh.
Ideas?

Hi.
How would I create a sop that I can slide over another mesh? Or does someone have an example of this already?
Thx

Hi.
Coming from a Maya perspective, is there a paint effects brush in Houdini?
If so, I'm trying to see if a paint effect-like brush can be made to have dynamics collisions added to it via sop. So that when drawn, it automatically self collides and collides with other objects such as a hair strands that collide.
Thoughts or ideas?
Thanks

Technical Discussion » Redrawing tracing lines according to new shape

Hi all.
I'm messing with an idea that calls for redrawing tracing lines according to a new shape.
For instance, let's say you have a ball (a sphere), but you want to take a section of the surface of that sphere and draw or “trace” a pattern of vector lines in that section on the sphere. Once you have this, let's say you resize that section (make it bigger or a slightly different shape). I want the resizing to cause the trace sop (function) to “redraw” or adjust the tracing to fit the new resized shape.
Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks!

I went to filepen to bring in the hip file and didn't see anything. Then looked at how other apps bring in stuff, then got stuck. So I looked up what a hip file was and finally found that it was a scene file that has some relationship with digital assets. Using the help system I was able see where I went wrong.
3dBuzz looks very good though.
Thanks guys.

Thanks, Sy. I'll definitely check out those videos.
Just thought it was a more simpler matter (which it still may be, relatively and comparatively speaking).
I was obviously looking for a “quick fix” (which of course is rare, most of the time), but it may still exist. (Don't know yet).
Also, on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being the most difficult), how easy or difficult is it to use the fore mentioned hip file Jeff attached? As a newbie, just trying to get an idea from a non-novice's perspective. (It “seems” very easy as I'm just unfamiliar with my way around houdini at the moment … and needing feedback).
Thanks again. :?:

What should you see after opening a hip file? Shouldn't you see an object? If not, where do you go to see the object(s)?

Thank you again, sir!
That pretty much answered my questions (for now anyways).
Next, I'm wondering about any of Houdini's scripting capabilities. What can you tell me about this?

Thanks for that quick reply.
I am also considering morphing heads (and whole bodies), I'll just have to keep this in mind. For ears, would you say that smoothing (in another progam maybe), working with fewer polygons or even separating the specific areas of the ears is better to deal with?
I'm still wondering about the change in polygons (and vertices). Do I need to concern myself with this?
On another subject, how would you deal with hair (as splines) in Houdini? Is this possible?
Thoughts?

I'm assuming this would work with any like shaped mesh, but how similar do the 2 meshes have to be before it wouldn't work? Or does houdini just do its best to merge the 2?
(Bare with me. I'm new to houdini, I'm just getting started with the terminology). :?
ps.
Oh yeah. I'm hoping that this method only moves the vertices around and doesn't delete or remove them. Thoughts?
Thx

What would be a good method for “auto aligning” 2 meshes? For instance, 2 hands meshes (with different polygon counts & vertices) but they still essentially look the same. Like the Hulk, Bruce Banner hand (or whatever) then morph into the Hulk's hand (more definition).
How can I pull this off, with a smooth alignment morph?
Thanks.

So in Houdini it seems I don't have to worry about the fact that the 2 objects don't have the same geometry. Houdini will handle the deformations with ease, correct?

Thanks, man. Would you say a person's face in 3d would be a candidate for (simple or more complex deformation)?

I'm new to any other “deformation/displacement” possibilities (just getting started) but if there are other alternatives please let me know what they are and how they would work (via Houdini or anything else).
My goal is to quickly change a model's form into the shape of something else (similar not too drastic), like a “pugg” nose into a straight nose or vice versa. Or a small ear to a slightly bigger ear (to reiterate) and afterwards have the actual geometry change to fit the new displaced data.
(Sorry for the redundancy).
So again, yes, it sounds like this would work according to your answer. But how is this achieved within Houdini? Can a container be used that does this for me (compare the model to be changed (displaced) to the “displacer” model (style used))?
thanks again
