I tried to upgrade Houdini versions with the launcher on 2 machines and it s failing
the install 'NEED Repair" which is not working. Unistalling is not working either.
I get issues such as :Repairing Houdini 19.5.752 failed
Error while unistalling files: Could not remove "C:/Program Files/Side Effects Software/Houdini 19.5.716/bin/tiff.dll' jpeg.dll Access is denied

SWestI could not find much help in the documentation
Okay, I do a lot of command line professionally and privately. That includes advanced networking between countries and in cities. However, for the case you described I don’t recommend going command line especially not for artists.
The term data in this regard is the same as a parameter value. It is not instructions nor any output.
If you want to learn how to interact with Houdini from a shell window here is the link to the official docs [www.sidefx.com]. Enjoy!
I found out how to do what I need
hython -c "import hou; hou.hipFile.load('C:/Users/Paul/Desktop/test.hiplc'); node = hou.node('/obj/in'); channel = node.parm('col'); channel.set(1.66); print('Value of col parameter:', channel.eval()); hou.hipFile.save('C:/Users/Paul/Desktop/test/test_modified.hiplc', save_to_recent_files=False)"

Hi thank you for your reply!
I don't need houdini to read data over time. I need the command line to change a pre-existing parameter in the project and then render. sorry if my question is unclear.
There is an int channel in this project that is controlling variation of the design.
I want to render with a command line in a flexible way so I can do
load hipfile
render variation 1
render variation 44
render variation 55
...

Is it possible to set an attribute or a channel from the command line?
I have a project where I want to create variations
This is what I would like to do:
ps: Tops and wedging could have been good but for different reasons it is not working with my setup

chf("../../"+`chs("../switch1/name")`+"/RS_objprop_displace_scale")
This is not working "Error: Unable to evaluate expression (Syntax error (/obj/RENDER_GEO/displacement/displacement_scale))."
Could someone guide me with how to write this correctly? I am not very clear about when to use ` or "
note I use a switch to render multiple geometries one after the other, then I want to reference parameters from the selected geometry using the expression above. on my switch I get the name of the selected Geo using
opinput(".",chs("input"))
Thank you!

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Display/Hide geometry nodes during animation

Hello,
I have a project with multiple geometries and want to activate/deactivate the geometry nodes during the animation in a procedural way.
Eg: I have 3 geometry nodes, ‘geo1’, ‘geo2’, ‘geo3’ and I want to render a sequence with ‘geo1’ frame 0 to 100, ‘geo2’ frame 101 to 200, ‘geo3’ frame 201 to 300
Later I want to use the Tops to do many permutations and for instance render ‘geo3’ frame 0 to 100, ‘geo2’ frame 101 to 200, ‘geo1’ frame 201 to 300 …
So I am looking for a sort of procedural and automated way to achieve this.
Thank you!

Technical Discussion » How Can I Create A Light Switch from A Set of Lights?

goldfarb
you can simply make a null
then edit it's parameters (the gear menu)
add a toggle (call it LightSet1)
then RMB on the new toggle and select Copy Parameter
now RMB over the "Enable" parameter of your light - select Copy Relative Reference
now when you toggle LightSet1 it will turn on/off your light....
just keep doing this for whatever parameters you want...
Thank you for this answer, it is working.
What about having a larger set of lightings to switch on/off and wanting to use an int slider (basically like the switch node)
Then the different lighting presets can also be used with 'Tops'

@Konstantin Magnus thank you very much sharing this solution
I look forward trying new drawings using the techniques!

protozoanInitially I was doing sketches with openFrameworks or Processing, it's a joy to discover how versatile and efficient Houdini is
Now that's something you don't see often, interesting!

Thank you for the replies and help!
jsmackCould you share with me references or other pointers for how to do that.
You could do as others have done and write a renderer in SOPs using VEX.
protozoanI don't need advanced lighting, this is looking simple and suitable for my application. I will try this technique.
If "simplistic" lighting is enough (like: find out what's approximately in the shadow of a directional light or a point light) you can look at the mask by feature SOP. This won't do "real" lighting though.
Andy_23I am experimenting turning 3D objects into vectorial 2D for a plotter machine. Testing in pointillist or wireframe style, I wish to control the density of the mesh/points based on lights and shadows. Here is a few tests
What would you do with that attribute? Jsmack and Martin's suggestions are all valid. Yet we don't know what you want out of it.
I'm curious.

Hello
I would like to get as an attribute the light received on a geometry.
Is it possible?
I could achieve it by getting Cd attribute using a texture that was previously baked with the light. However that would be a more tedious and less flexible process.
