xubuntu 12.04 LTS
plugin installed to:
/home/username/houdini12.5/dso
i have other dependencies and have put them in the usual place (/usr/include and /usr/lib) and ran ldconfig.
my dependencies are shared.
ubuntu 12.04 comes with gcc 4.6. i wanted to match houdini 12.5 gcc4.4 so i have both compilers installed via sudo update-alternatives –config gcc (which is pretty handy and easy compared to manually trying to have 2 gcc versions installed)
when i compile with 4.4, it doesn't load. when i compile with 4.6 the plugin loads. not exactly sure why 4.6 works over 4.4. maybe somethings break when using sudo update-alternatives –config gcc?

that's a great idea.
it would also be helpful if we could search only titles and search using quotations. it would probably help reduce multiple posts on the same subject and increase knowledge sharing.

it's a high quality 1000 watt power supply.
tricecold
just to be sure, if its an intense sim utilizing %100 of the cpu, it could be a PSU issue also, Usually PSU issues restart the entire systems.

64 gb. i've been keeping an eye on the ram as the sim is going.
MartybNzstkeg
when i write out large files (like *.sim) that are about 1gb or over, my whole computer will restart.

How much Ram have you got? The only restarts Houdini has ever forced is running out of OpenCL ram - but that was before and might be fixed now.

the only reason why i'm using centos 7 and not staying with 6 is because of google chrome.

i've noticed that centos 7 gets real clunky when under load (simming, compiling, etc)
sometimes the UI freezes for 3 seconds. video that i'm streaming is choppy.centos 6 wasn't bad like this. i haven't tested it as extensively, but ubunutu had similar issues.
anyone else having this issue in centos 7 or ubuntu?

i'm running houdini_gcc4.6 on centos7 (with gcc4.8) and it's running. i was just wondering about long term stability.
when they come out with a houdini_gcc*.* this means that it is certified and tested for a system running that version of gcc?

do you think sidefx will eventually support rhel7 and build a gcc 4.8 version? how long does that usually take? (ie how long did it take to come out with the gcc 4.6 version when rhel6 came out)

would using a different gcc version to compile hdk plugins be highly un recommended?
i'm using centos7 and would like to create hdk plugins but centos7 is using gcc 4.8 and houdini is at 4.6

i'm just wondering if *.sim makes centos crash and *.bgeo doesn't
if i were to use *.bgeo though, would i be able to access particle information (i.e. velocities, vectors, age, etc)?
