So I have a 16bit grayscale image
and I need to extract the first 8bits and put that in the the R channel
and then put the next 8bits into the G channel
and then export an 8bit image of RGB where B is black.
That will allow me to keep detail but keep things as an 8bit image.
Need some pointers on this for Hcomposite? i don't want to do this in Photoshop.
thanks

not that it is a full solution, but I pulled my second graphics card and now I have no problem opening Houdini.
Just not as fun to lose my third monitor.
It would be great to be able to have it work again like it did in 11.##. with that version I was able to run with multiple cards A o K.

FWIW,
I've been plagued with crashes in window 8. even with the 306 driver and the newest beta.
I believe my problem is I have two graphics cards, even though they are the same ones NVidia 580. I have three monitors, one is a cintiq
Oddly enough I was able to get to work for a day, but I can't get the latest build of 12.5 running.
I'm going to pull my second card and see if that helps. I imagine it will.
Odd that this happens in 12.# builds.. I've had this configuration for awhile and 11.# worked fine
Any thoughts on the two card support?

Just remember that this projection will cook per frame. It is great for rendering as it gives you lots of control but you may want to rig a preview differently for viewport speed.
-k
(Note: I haven't looked at the file.. but if it is what I think it is.. then it will cook, no way around that)

Is your model poly or NURBS?
I'm going to leap and say NURBS… since you say it is rounded in shaded mode. By default the display perference for level of detail is 1, so a NURBS surface will be “smooth”. If it was polys as Edward points out then the facetSOP is one way to get it sharper.
If you want to continue with NURBS then you can add point weights to the CVs on the edge of your sword.
or add more geometry to “tighten” it up
good luck

Thanks Ondrej for clarifying the home'ing and frame'ing.
I'm on the same page as you now, I think some custom hotkeys for speed and I'll be back in business.
thanks

okay I think I found it.. under the persp1 menu in the viewport it seems I can keep the perspective window and home in Front/Right/Left, and i remain in the perspective window.. still have to hit ‘g’ to frame selected.. but maybe I can rig a hotkey to do all both..
maybe, maybe not.. but at least I can get a hotkey for the homing I like.
then it is one key stroke away.

okay, thanks for that.
I found the Custom option, and now it seems you can mimic the old behavour but you have to do it in two steps.
so from a perspective camera (not a real cam#)
choose the Front view then home selected.
the default is to home ALL from the Front/Back/Left etc views.
Or am I missing something else
Thanks

Hey gang,
Before 9… when working from a single view port….there was a way to have a perspective viewport then use the options for Front/Right/Left etc to home your view so you could place the perspective view to that location then you would be viewing from that position and could just start tumbling into perspective easily. I found it really handy to position my view for working with models.
Now it seems you can't to that. As soon as you go to a perspective window you either have it or you don't.
I guess the old behavior would be like having a camera locked to all the time, but as soon as you use one of the options for Front/Back etc.. if flips you out of the locked camera automatically.
Does anyone else misses the old way?
is there a way view from the perspective viewport but home front?

if you used the subdivideSOP be aware that the sop is an iteration to the limit surface, not the limit surface. The step of 1, 2, 3, do not necessarily match what you find in other applications.
when you render as a subdivision surface the result is the limit surface.

some of the slowness you are experiencing could be from the version you are using. there have been a lot of improvements in H9 so you might want to upgrade .. if you have the latest, then you could try to do a few things to help with performance.
the default is on for the update of all the gadgets in the UI so that is good so your viewport is optimized, the wireframes of the geometry could be converted to tri-strip geometry, which is faster to draw for the viewport.
there is more as well, but you machine as a part in this as well.

Anyone care to share their thoughts on cloth in Houdini?
Anyone using the syflex plugin? How does it compare to MAYA's implementation?
I haven't looked at the syflex plugin since 2004-2005 so i'm sure it has improved… hopefully it is more houdini like in its deployment.
thanks

er.. how much a problem is it?
we haven't looked to heavily but first glance changes from 2.4.4 to the 2.5? version sesi ships with h9 are minimal… but I could be wrong.

anyone have some sage advice?
the examples are years old, documentation is well lacking..
Odforce is helpfull but still 2-3 years out of date.
I was curious how hard it was to setup, edit sessions and all that jazz.Seems everyone uses motion builder.
too bad i hate to go to windows.
