Technical Discussion » Knife tool ?

Hi guys,
Ive had a good look at the fracture tool , but is there any other way to slice up polygon volumes without the need for high poly counts . I have had great success slicing up a grid randomly and then defining each poly as a piece and then extruding each piece , but as ever there is no back face because I am using a grid.
I thought there might be some sort of knife tool to slice up simple geometric shapes.

Hi all , I am just asking if anyone has ever attempted or is it possible to take digital data from encoders on real world camera setups and then pump that data into Houdini.

Well just off the top of my head , sounds like the sphere doing the smashing needs some velocity which can be added in the RBD object node. Also look at the value of your gluesolver remember if you have 15000 as a value holding it togeather you will need a good punch from the sphere to break it, hence the velocity, tweek those 2 nodes and you should be fine.

Jon use a RBDglue solver , theres a great example using this technique in the help files. It shows a ball shattering some glass that has been fractured in SOP's

Thats great , your first port of call should be downloading the free versions and setting your own projects and doing your own digging , then you will really know where you stand.

Well as a new user to Houdini , but an experienced operator. I am stunned with what a great application it is and many of our FX tds have nothing to say but good things about houdini.I work with people who have used it at Core R&H , Framestore & Sony
The big things that people have mentioned is the lack of skilled people at a TD level who can set up a Houdini pipeline and then manage it from top to bottom.Lets face facts if you cannot find the staff your not going to use the application.
I must admit I have had a good time creating effects etc , but when it has come to trying to figure out ok “how do i build an interface with buttons to set values ” I gave up.If you use maya its all there in the mel help So as ever Better documentation is required and everybody Ive spoken to about houdini mentions this more so than anything else !!!

Bunkai I really do get the impression from this thread and the one over at xsi base that you dont have much experience with 3d in general Thats not a bad thing per say, but you are trying to compare chalk and cheese.
I think really at your level any application you learn be it xsi , maya , max , etc will put you in good shape to progess your career.
After working in film using xsi and maya its all the same and after a while it all becomes the same … some jobs im using maya , some xsi. I would say though learning maya or max will help to get your career kick started as those programs are commonly used by lots of studios.
Good luck

jean , constraints in xsi will not port into Houdini or maya , you should split off your , pan , tilt , move onto seperate Nulls, then you can plot out your transforms , for export. and never ever use a null as a target/look at for your camera , real world camera's dont use that.

Im having a detailed look now Alex .. I will let you know, but I do not understand how a VOP would help me with this ? could you explain the whole point of using it.
craig thanks for putting the expression into the correct contex, So far the biggest difficulty Im having is knowing what I want to do , but having nothing to refer against , no wonder people are scared of this application, when a guy who helped write the documentation doesnt know where to look
