Generally it should also show up in the tab menu in obj path or the viewport. If i am not wrong?
you can assign a shortcut by adding the tool in the shelf and ctrl-alt-shift click on it to assign your custom shortcut.

i think it kind of depends on what you want to do with it. I am a generalist and the system I would build:
- supermicro workstation motherboard
- 2x xeon 2660 v3
- 128gb ram
- nvidia titan or gtx 980. i would go with the 980 and save up some money here.
- 2x 500gb ssd or 1x 1tb.. depending if you want to install linux beside windows i would seperate them on 2 drives.
- few sata drives for storage
to be honest. if possible i would wait for the new processors.
see here: http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Intel-Skylake.jpg [cdn.wccftech.com]
seems like it will still take a while for them to release.
here you can see the best multi cpu performance https://www.cpubenchmark.net/multi_cpu.html [cpubenchmark.net]
hope it helps.

you can add any tool to a shelf so you could just add it to your custom shelf and assign a shortcut to it. I tried it out and it works.
add a new shelf. left click in it and select Edit Shelf…
Under Tab Tools look for Find materials. Select it and press Apply.
Then Ctrl alt shift click the tool in the shelf and there you can add a shortcut.
hope it helps.

Any News?
Note that this seems to only happen with dual screen and a wacom tablet! It works on one of the monitors but not the other. On the other monitor (positioned at 0,0) the cursor position input in Houdini seems slightly off to the left side from the actual input of the cursor. This way it kind of makes a click and drag while you click. Hope this helps? Sry for my bad english.

if you have dualscreen the menus etc only work good within the first monitor. on the second monitor it has the click issues.

this is normal.
this is how the normals are and houdini just displays them as they are. there has been a debate about this some time ago i think. most people want to keep it this way if i remember correctly.
you could cusp the normals with adding vertex sop and set the cusp angle to 40 or something below 89°

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » extruding along axis

sure.
right click while in extrude tool and select local control
right click again and under align handle select world.
first thing will put your pivot in the center of selected polygons
second will align the handle to world position.
with this you can extrude in one axis.
you might want to add a shortcut to them. I use “F”, G and H for toggling tool options. You can assign shortcuts to the keys separately depending on the tool or context you are in . There shouldn't be any conflicts.
hope this helps?

pelos
merge the curves, and after that use a join node.
that will produce 1 primitive curve.
this wont work with overlapping lines. check his example! unfortunatelly i dont know how to solve this.

there isnt really a simple answer to this. it takes years of experience imo to get good. In the end the rendering comes together from Lightning Setup and Shaders. And your eye for Details. The Render Settings wont have much impact on the look but more the quality/correct settings to output the image.
You might want to focus on Lightning and Shaders for a while and Start with a Still Life Study where you can basically test stuff out. There is a Tutorial Workshop which is a good start for getting into this:
https://vimeo.com/34744702 [vimeo.com]
it also covers modeling
Also dont underestimate the power of 2d editing/grading. You can fix and add a lot in post production -> Photoshop.
There are a lot of parts taking place to make something look real and it comes down to the Artist to look at the real world and see how things look, react to light. Once you got used to what the Settings on the Lights, Shaders etc. do, you can take the information you see in real life and adapt it into houdini.
also if you wanna go more advanced there's a lot to read:

im very sad about centOS 7. To me they went the wrong direction, but this is another discussion. I would stay with 6.5 or get another distro. But dunno which one.
I'm really happy with CentOS 6 and Houdini, runs great on it. very stable!

hi,
i just found this by accident:
you can hold alt to select points in other nodes. and shift+alt to select multiple points in different nodes. after moving them it will merge them nodes together.

Bookmarks are cool but my honest opinion:
I never used bookmarks much, only found out about it while accidentally pressing ALT + B in the the network context.
It would be cool if this little “edit bookmark” window would not only be for deleting bookmarks but also to navigate between them. It would just be quicker instead of clicking a small icon and browse a pulldown menu.

i use this approach too for small bevels it works great but its not a solution for doing real rounded corners.

McNistor
Example: entering in poly mode in Houdini requires tapping ‘4’ key. Switching between box or lasso or brush is another action which, AFAIK, you can't do without using the mouse since there's not possible to assign a hotkey. Might be wrong, so please correct me on this if that's the case.
you can assign a hotkey to that at /Houdini/Panes/Geometry Viewers -> “SELECT TOOL CYCLE”
dont forget this “houdini volume modeling”
i'd also love to see more in the volume sculpting.
