I have not tried Houdini 7 yet. Is it possible to use the Houdini 7 Apprentice to output to renderman to render?
I know the shading network workflow for renderman shaders has been improved a lot in Houdini 7.
But the only thing that I am concrened is if there is any documantations or user manual for this topic (renderman in Houdini). Lots of things in Houdini are hidden! (especially things which are related to renderman in Houdini)
Not too many written tutorials though!

Technical Discussion » is AI possible in Houdini?

Thanks! matrixman!
I will go through that Houdini flock tutorial soon.
But I think using instance object in a crowd scene is not very effective. Because it is very difficult to blend motion curves (especially when behaviour changes). I think I would use renderman 's Level of Detail technique to solve render problem.

I am a beginner in Houdini, I know chop is a very powerful section in Houdini. Dose anyone ever use chop to make some AI scene successfully. Also, does anyone know if there is any AI houdini tutorial? “Massive” is a bit too expensive to buy. That would be great if Houdini can archieve the crowd and AI effects.

Does anyone know how I can apply renderman's level of detail trick on houdini? e.g. “DelayedReadArchive”.
This could help when we are going to render a huge amount of objects!

I cannot find Background colour under viewport when I am in SOP & OBJ mode. I can only see “display Ortho grid”, “showname”, “show camera name”….. and “Level of Detail”, “Aspect Ratio”……. (already under viewport)
in the display option> background
I can see “image source”, “3d viewport”, “texture viewport” but i cannot find anything about background colour.
I sometimes find Houdini's help is not helpful. Quite difficult to search and not too many examples.
I get frustrated to just do this simple task! This is already my second night to find a way to just to change the background colour.
I am currently using Houdini 6.0.

There is a “softshadow” option in MtoR (Maya). It will create mutiple shadowmap to generate a softshadow effects. I just want to know if this “softshadow” function is avaiable in Houdini.
Thanks

I successfully created depth map shadow in Houidni and rendered with renderman. But I found the shodow map's edge created by Houdini's “autogenerate depth map” is a bit too hard!
Does anyone know how I can created softshadow in Houdini? (I will be using renderman to render.)

I am so dissappointed that I still cannot get the shadow rendered with renderman renderer.
the renderer that I am using is 3delight.
the lightshader i used is
light shadowlight (
float intensity = 40;
color lightcolor = 1;
point from = point “shader” (0, 0, 0);
point to = point “shader” (0,-1,0);
string mapname = “”;
)
{
float atten = 1;
uniform vector A = normalize(to-from);
illuminate (from, A, radians(30))
{
if(mapname != “”)
atten=1-shadow(mapname, Ps);
Cl = atten*intensity *lightcolor/(L.L);
}
}
Then my setting for the light in houdini is
shading:
Depth map : auto-generate (closest z)
z-depth map : ZTemp/dep.tif
rib
rib shader : “shadowlight” “mapname”
the whole rendered image looks fine except the shadow is missing. But the shadow looks fine when I rendered with mentra.
After I rendered the rib file, I also tried to use the command line to render this file with 3delight. But there is an error message.
“user parameter ”mapname“ is of unknown type”
then I checked the rib, the line for this shadowmap is:
LightSource “shadowlight” “/obj/light1” “mapname”
But the shadowmap file dep.tif was created successfully.
can anyone help me with this problem? It already spent 4 nights with this problem. I believed Side efftects Houdini should write their menu more clear with more example. (especially with the renderman topic)

when I tried to open the “help menu” from the left upper corner of the parameter box, the help message becomes the HTML code instead of the hints of the sop. I do not what I did wrong. Does anyone know how I can change it back to normal help window.

How can I use renderman shaders to render Houdini's curves?
I tried to assign my own renderman shader but I was unable to have the curves rendered. (it worked with mentra renderer.)
Can anyone give me a hint?

is it possible to take Houdini's variable (e.g. $F, $NCY……) to rman shaders? How about if I am not using Prman? I may be using other renderman renderer.

I tried to use rman displacement shader to render a sphere in Houdini but the sphere seems broken on the bumped area. (seems clipped)
I think I should increase the bounding box of the geometry.
Could anyone give me a hint what I should do in order to fix this problem?
(but the displacement looks fine on a grid.)

I know Syflex for Houdini is a plugin for cloth simulation. Does anyone have tried it yet? Is it same as “Syflex for Maya”?

Thanks!
