Just a follow-up on this issue…
The newly (today) released stable nvidia-driver series 340.x looks safe so far.
Tested against 13.0.477 and X stays up, everything seems fine.

You should be able to run on a newer gcc with the 4.6-build just fine.
I just checked, we use 4.9.0 and everything is fine.

I ran into this issue lately with the few latest nvidia beta drivers. When running H13, the whole X session would go down, right at the startup of H.
There already exists a bug for this.
You could check what driver you are using, and try to downgrade. The last beta driver I found working with H13 was 337.12
Everything after that mark would bring your X server down in an ugly fashion.

fsimerey: you can just use the generic edition to make your PKGBUILD, or even use it without a package, just “raw”.

Those horsepower displays are not always easy to read. If you have a lot of cores and they are all at a few % only, it's a hint that in reality the whole box is idle but one core is blasting at 100%.
Also, nothing is “fully multithreaded”. Some parts are, others are not. That's why you must use the aforementioned performance monitor to hunt your culprit down.
There are a lot of other factors that could come into account, cache sizes insufficient, your temp/cache folder bandwidth might be network bound etc.

That's what we use. Might be a bit overkill just to convert, but it works.

There are different flavours of PDS .img files around, but in the past I have been able to work with some of them in Globalmapper. That thing is also nice to do reprojections of data.
It might be overkill for what you need though.

Rendering is pure CPU, even though you can slow it down even more, if you have insufficient RAM available. The graphics card does not help with rendering, Mantra is CPU-only.
Typical rendering times for final HD frames range from 4 - 5 minutes for simple scenes to hours for complex stuff. For a “ship in the ocean” scene you are looking at 1+ hour, depending on the complexity.

Is it 1-2GB for the whole 325 frames sequence or 1-2GB *per frame*?
If it's for the whole.. that's quite a normal and expected size.

There is nothing better, even though most people do it with “trunc”
trunc(315.34543435*100)/100
(but that's basically the same thing)
