First let me say I am a novice user and also really addicted with Houdini as a creative tool.
At the moment trying to get a basic mastery of the rendering pipeline, shaders and the various rendering solutions available for Houdini.
A no brainer to me would be to have a site dedicated to comparing the various render engines out there. No single render solution is THE best. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, and,
as someone who doesn't have 100's of additional spare hours to master every rendering solution out there ( ie being told to learn them all!), it is those strengths and weaknesses I need to know.

As a novice I can quickly see what a HUGE amount of time might be spent iteratively tweaking the various settings in Mantra Surface materials to get just the right look.
In addition to what is installed by default, is anyone aware of any 3rd party libraries of material settings for Mantra Surfaces?

Quality of instruction for ANY complex software varies a great deal. As a novice wanted to share my (highly) biased feedback on a few popular teachers
John Moncrief - A++
especially for novices. His style of delivery, use or repetition, and attention to detail and explaining the obvious make him my TOP choice for novices and anyone wanting to learn HOW to teach complex software. Just wish he would cover more advanced topics and perhaps give more inspiring examples in his lessons.
Ari Danesh A-
Really like Ari's style. Have learned SO much from him! I think his existing online lessons which are close to an hour in length would benefit by being broken up into smaller ‘chunks’ and perhaps with a little more rehearsal.
Peter Quint B+
Although he covers probably more of Houdini's features than any other instructor I find his style of delivery a bit dry for my tastes. But wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others! Probably more suited to experienced Houdini users.

As far as I can see the results seem identical in both Render view and when rendering in MPlay.
Can any Houdini experts explain the differences between the 2 rendering methods and when to use each?

Houdini Learning Materials » UV mapping> flatten vs pelt vs unwrap

Trying to get my head wrapped around(pun intended) UV mapping in Houdini.
But confused as every tutorial I've followed suggests a different tool to use.
Are there any guidelines or best practices for choosing between Unwrap, Flatten and or Pelt?
Is the type of geometry the determining factor?
Also, the only recent tutorial I can find is this one going over UV Flatten
https://www.sidefx.com/tutorials/uv-flatten/ [sidefx.com]
Are there any others that are more comprehensive?

Is there any trick to downloading files at 3daet?
None of the example links seem to be in .zip or other archive format. When you click to down load all you get is a browser full of text.
Also tried doing a ‘Save link as’ and renaming the file but wouldn't open in Houdini

Ok
So I've read this thread
https://www.sidefx.com/forum/topic/43276/ [sidefx.com]
Watched this from start to finish
https://archive.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3085&Itemid=419 [archive.sidefx.com]
which is a great overview for creating a variety of game effects
As well as Peter Quints tutorial on creating a looping flame
https://vimeo.com/46910933 [vimeo.com]
What's very much needed (for noobs like myself) is a step by step procedure for creating a flipbook.
I know that I need to
1) create the effect
2) render out as a series of images
3) bring those image back into Houdini to create a texture sheet(using a Mosaic node I believe)
Can any houdini magicians help with #2 and 3 above? Looking for a tutorial that doesn't assume I know all the basics, like how to render fx sequences and how to bring images back into Houdini.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » licensing process is painful

Thanks Rob
Finally up and running.
Yeah resolved the issue with server versions.
Also some confusion about how the License Administrator actually works
Seeing licenses already installed when it launched was throwing me off
I didn't realize you must choose File>Install new licenses any time the Admin popup appears and it should ONLY appear once before installing any new licenses.
I still think the whole process could be streamlined and made less error prone for newbies like myself…

For serious work don't use a Mac. Even with the latest version 15. Just my 2 cents
I found out the hard way as a novice. It seems there are tons of OpenGL bugs in the viewport for the Mac version of Houdini. Feels almost like beta software.
Now transferring my licenses to a Windows laptop.
I assume many power (Pro) users use Linux boxes

Am I the only one that finds the licensing process extremely painful?
Just found out after reading the licensing info that you are only allowed to return your license twice?
So what happens if you want to return a 3rd time to install on a different machine? Over the course of 2-3 years I see this as a fairly common scenario.
And after installing my license strings via the License administrator it seems I still have to redownload & reinstall Houdini Indie, I can't simply enter license info within Apprentice.
Finally installed Indie (half day later) but when launching I am now informed my version of License Server is too old??
So then tried uninstalling everything via the uninstaller, and reinstalling Indie once more.
Launched Indie, License Administrator launches, chose ‘I have a paid license…’clicked ‘License Settings’…same error.
Can anyone tell me how I upgrade JUST the license server?
wow
If I can get past this then learning Houdini by comparison should be a breeze
