One hundred readers and no answer :?
Its something humorous folk with Houdini, I also asked for this kind of Full Feature training, but there is NOT any complete practical Tutorial or Lessons at this time from start to end for the whole Pipeline Integration and realistic(!) use with HD in VFX projects with detailed environment.
Its not HD as stand alone, its also tracking and compositing (Fusion, Nuke) and bring all together in and out HD.

This kind of high end CG and VFX training I'am missing for Houdini, too!

You'll be excited to learn some new training is coming soon for Houdini that does just what you want, takes a shot from beginning to end… Can't say more but watch for something in early 2011.

Sorry, but Houdini is the most complex and difficult 3D App of all but there is NOT any complete Tutorial or Lessons from start to end for the whole Pipeline Integration and realistic use(!) in VFX projects.
Here is one of hundred examples for a step-by-step through process from start, simulate liquid material, adding lights, materials, shading and proper render settings to a final product output in Maya.

my suggestion would be this ;
lets test through a poll “ what apprentice users need from a Houdini video tutorial ” . this might be useful not only to SideFX but to official houdini-video-makers too .
short but effective videos could be linked within docs too ( like example scenes ) .
i'm not lazy , but i believe that this could help me ( and others like me ) to gain, a lot faster, confidence with this “ masterpiece of software ” .
Read my suggestion in Post No3:
Live Action and CG with Houdini in the Depth
How to take your Houdini 3D models and incorporate them seamlessly into a Live Action HD video.
- Basic Motion Tracking Footage with Syntheyes, Boujou etc. and bring into Houdini
- Adding 3D Objects and realistic Lights (HDRI, Radiosity ) to Scene that work
- In Depth Rendering out the Different Passes
- Compositing all togehter with Fusion or After Effects
There enough short videos on the web but nothing in the Depth!
If you look the last four short Videos from Peter Quint to this Topic (Full Compositing I-IV), you see the problems and the Result is not very realistic…

Thanks to Peter for the series!
Oh, by the way: If you look the four videos, you understand my questions
And if i see the complicated way to add a simple CG-shadow on the original plate its unbelievable how much time you need for this simple effect. In Lightwave, C4D you have 2 switches Enable/disable cast/recieve shadows for this in any Object/Light….

The Dark side is easier, faster, but no, not more powerful it is.
Houdini can do faster, more powerful - but sorry we can't (we won't) show at the moment. It's the secret of the big studios…

Well if your already a light wave user and can comp why on earth would you need a tutorial to hold your hand , surely you know exactly what you require from your lighting passes to produce a shot ? .
Houdini is completely different to ALL other 3D App to get the realistic looking details!!! And again: There is not any Houdini Lesson on the Web, which shows a final realisitc looking result, so the workflow is unknown for me.
http://vimeo.com/7612942 [vimeo.com]
Sorry, to much for me to understand sustained, LW, XSI, etc. don't need procedural shading, so it is impossible for me to render realistic results.

Your never going to get at tutorial to match every need , makes you wonder how we managed before internet tutorials ever existed.
Why is Houdini the only 3D App - where not exists ONE start to end tutorial for Live Footage? Lightwave, XSI, Maya, 3DMAX - for ALL (!) these Apps are one or more complete Lessons how to render and integrate CG to use in Real Footage.
Here is one of this overview - a full start to end example for Maya, this original course is about 2 1/2 Hours:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maGLn18B9uI [youtube.com]
I'am Lightwave and Fusion User i need no composition Stuff - I need any Lesson for realistic Houdini render results !
Masterclass: Pyro FX here on this Site for example. What do you think, how it looks when you take the Render results of this class in Live Action
Hm, is Houdini to complex to show this in one Tutorial…..

Okay, here is my Idea and wish to Online Schools (posted again on odforce.net)
2-4 Hour realistic Houdini Apprentice start to end tutorial for special effect in VFX Production
Live Action and CG with Houdini
How to take your Houdini 3D models and incorporate them seamlessly into a Live Action HD video.
- Basic Motion Tracking Footage with Syntheyes, Boujou etc. and bring into Houdini
- Adding 3D Objects and realistic Lights (HDRI, Radiosity ) to Scene that work
- In Depth Rendering out the Different Passes
- Compositing all togehter with Fusion or After Effects
I ask for this, because for Houdini there is not any such Lessons for the hole VFX pipeline on all Houdinis learning resources and it's quite different to render and use results for realistic Live Footage!
Here is an overview of a full start to end example for Maya, this original course is about 2 1/2 Hours:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maGLn18B9uI [youtube.com]
Its can be a simple scene shot but the focus must on realistic results
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JA6t9uA72Q [youtube.com]
My Suggestion: A Bridge collapse over a river - A live Footage from a River and a CG Collapse Bridge
http://download.sidefx.com/images/stories/community/gallery/bridge_collapse.mov [download.sidefx.com]
So you can show: Tracking Footage, using a Bridge Asset, DOPs, particle systems, procedural VEX shader, VOPs and HDRI Shading in Action.
I suggest Live action and CG because i was surprised that there is not any of this for Houdini and the node based workflow is complete different to other 3D App. - Camera mapping, using matchmoving Data, Shading, Lightning and render passes for seamless(!) integration. For Houdini-Apprentice it useful to see one time this complete workflow for use in Live Action.
A small Making Of Live Action and CG
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFDKRGfBR48 [youtube.com]
All the other theoretical tutorials (like Peter Quint's videos [vimeo.com]) play around with DOPs, VOPs, VEX, POPs etc. but the render end-results often looks terrible and unusable or there are no Outputs.
Their are many independent or Apprentice real filmmakers outside the big studios, which use Houdini for CG Elements in Real Footage and with this Tutorial Series or DVD (shipping, download) you should learn how to get realistic final results with the (not user friendly) Houdini.
So, i hope nay Online School read this and make something called: “Houdini in Production”.
Thanks

….but do you really think that modeling, texturing and rendering is senseless until you put all that together for some real footage integration?
Sure yes
Modeling -> Texturing -> Lightning -> Rendering -> compositing, (perhaps matchmoving) what else
–> http://eat3d.com/livecg1 [eat3d.com]
and if you think so may i ask you what´s the reason for beefing about the cmivfx tutorial. i have not seen it but i´m sure its well done and worth the price. and if procedural modeling is not what you are interested in, just don´t by it. it´s quite easy!
I don't know why so rude I have a simple short question in my first post:
Is the Powerful procedural Road Assets able to create and render a realistic road/roads in a Landscape?
Sorry, by the way: for Houdini does not exist any Book, and outside a Filmschool you only have this tutorials to learn Houdini. And there are not any tutorial showing real footage integration and to get this needed high quality Renders are it's quite different to all other 3d App….

Wrong, Visual Effects are computer generated imagery that can be pass as a real action incorporated into live footage or totatly replaced.
Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is an animated movie, not a vfx movie.
My first question was the sense of this procedural Road Assets or it's possible to create a final realitic render frame with this and not a discussion of the correct definition of VFX

Thanks 4 this hint, the HDRI and other 3Buzz DVDs looks very nice.
But I just smiling again by reading the content Index of this DVD
And in the DVD trainingvideo they don't have any real footage to compare the results, they render a Teapot on a table :?
Okay, you don't need to post “hey, look at this cinema movie or this”…. I have read many stories and spend many time to Houdini last month and see that 95% of the trainings video on all websites i found ends pre-visualization or has only full CG.
It is unusual for me, because for ALL other 3D App like Maya, 3DMax, etc. you find Tonnes of payed or free Videos, Lessons for Matchmoving and workflow to Render different CG Passes into Live footage.
We are a non-profit Film Voluntary association -just Apprentice- and the question at the moment i have: what is possible with Houdini as “One Man show” for VFX?
The cinema movies produced by prof. studios has hundred of special CG-Artist for this stuff, but we won't make 90 Minutes VFX but some VFX Scene should - 100% realistic.
So one concrete Question for example: LTree
This is an example original shot:
http://www.fxguide.com/modules/NewsUpload/files/09Nov/proposal/vfx_056_05_original.jpg [fxguide.com]
and this the final shot:
http://www.fxguide.com/modules/NewsUpload/files/09Nov/proposal/vfx_056_05_comp.jpg [fxguide.com]
Is Huodini's LTree+shading+mantra+composite able to create realistic Trees? I know the workflow in Lightwave or Modo + AfterEffects - you need 5-6 Hours for setup, and round about 25 minutes rendertime per frame and you learn this in one week.
Oh, i also found this very amazing video from one Apprentice Challenge 8)

You say you are new to Houdini. If that is the case dont write off things that you dont understand. Try to understand what is happening and put those motions into your own work and make some nice visuals.
Hm, its not my intension.
I will figure out at the moment - is Houdini right for me (a “normal” 3D Application User ) and what Power is needed from scratch to ONE final VFX-Filmframe :? and i compare this with my current workflow….
So will close this here.

Yes, the tutorials are very professional, but i'm newbie to Houdini and just a little confused what the sense of this asset out of playing with the sliders?
The tutorial use a Photo of many real Roads and this suggests to create realistic roads with this asset, so my question was, is an CG-artists be able to use this asset to render realistic roads for VFX?
And my other indirect suggestion of this was to make the 2nd Tutorial-part and show how to create the final real render result starting by using this asset
Otherwise this a theoretical video for looking inside procedural modeling in Houdini without any useful output.
thanks

Use the Powerful procedural Road Assets to create and render a realistic road - or is this not possible with this asset

Is there any complete tutorial: Houdini for VFX - Live Action and CG :? like this for Maya and Combustion: http://eat3d.com/livecg1 [eat3d.com]
How to: Houdini 3D models and incorporate them seamlessly into Live Action video with Lightning or HDRI and Rendering out the Different Passes and use Live Action tracking Data from SynthEyes, etc.
This Peter Quint's videos [vimeo.com] and many others Tutorials understands students of Theoretical computer science
I'am a Lightwave user and no Mathematics student or is Houdini only for this Group :?
I found nothing for this VFX workflow with Houdini.
thanks
