I hope it's not anytime soon, because I've been very busy lately (and will be still for some time) and I'd love to participate in it.

I'm not sure if this has been brought to the attention earlier yet:
"SGI:
As of Houdini 7, IRIX is no longer a supported system for running Houdini. [sidefx.com]"
It's official, I guess

I'm not sure if it's illegal to use BMRT (Blue Moon Rendering Tools) since it was adopted along with the rest of the products Exluna developed and published which was then later acquired by nVidia, I still saw it back-up'ed at various (non ‘warez’) sites; well if it's not illegal, look for it in Google or so.
I used to really like that particular RenderMan-compatible implementation, especially in combination with Houdini; the RMan ROP handles it very well, make sure to render/export as an older type of PRMan, surely as far as the script file (RIB) goes.

I tried, but that didn't work.
In the past I also PM'ed the administrator, I think, but got no reply.

I've addressed this at od aswell. The “mod” (modification) business is also quite interesting, look at Half-Life for instance.

I was wondering, since the only Sun Solaris version of Houdini is only available for the SPARC platform, are there plans for a x86 Solaris version of Houdini?
Oh and, could someone post a screenshot of Houdini running in dtwin (Solaris Motif/CDE) perhaps with a dterm window with “uname -a” in the background?

Try check your clipping (geometry culling) values in the Display Panel > Culling (keyboard: D). You could decrease your near and increase your far clipping values.

I'm trying to render this scene using multiple computers. To avoid any access/permission-related problems, I've put the actual HIP file on a Win98 computer in my network to let the two Win2K-SP4 powered computers, with hserver running of course, render it from there.
I've tried rendering my HIP file, seems to work but in the render display pane I only see “local” host listed. Is this right? I'm not really noticing anything, speed-wise, either.
What am I missing or what could I be doing wrong?

I agree, Houdini could be a hell lot more stable… but it's a combination of factors.
As for Linux vs Windows, Linux obviously wins. I've never had any serious problems in Linux with any Houdini version. Processor-wise, I couldn't say… (Maybe Intel is the safest?) and graphicscard-wise if you have the money get a professional OpenGL videocard if you don't nVidia GeForce cards should work well, except for maybe some minor things like displaying flaws (face culling, in my case; GeForce4 Go). I can't say much over ATI, except for what I've heard about people who own them and which is generally positive about games and less when it comes to OpenGL (compatibility issues mostly).

Technical Discussion » $HOME and $MSVCDIR environment variables (HDK)

Whenever I try to use the hcustom command I get two errors, luckily the same kind (environment variables). In the regular Win2K command prompt shell it tells me that my “HOME” environment variable isn't configured correctly but when I execute hcustom in the Cygwin bash shell it tells me that my MSVCDir isn't configured correctly.
I don't know what “HOME” is suposed to be, but I've tried to get the MSVCDir one right (even with DOS-length, dir/x, filenames) but nothing has worked so far.
- I have Visual C++ is installed here: C:\Program Files\Visual_Studio (C:\Program Files\Visual_Studio\VC98)
- And the Houdini HDK is installed here: C:\Houdini_6.1.299\toolkit

I'm also not such a MSVC++ fan, I use GCC mostly.
Maybe things are going to change in the future… More openended, more alternatives (GCC?) etc.

3dsmax works fine, same goes for the 3ds fileformat. I've also tried old(er) Detonator drivers, but didn't work/improve much either… as far as I can recall.
I might consider installing WinXP. I hope that won't give me trouble and/or slow things down. Because aside the fact that Houdini 6.x.xxx won't work properly for me, everything works exceptionally well. Afterall, it's a Micro$oft product
For the time being I'm still using Houdini 5.5.230 in Win2K and 6.1.299 in Linux

I think you might want to consult the latest RenderMan specification:
https://renderman.pixar.com/products/rispec/index.htm [renderman.pixar.com]
Note: If you render via the RenderMan ROP in Houdini you won't need to change anything, locally, to the scripts (RIBs). Unless that's what you want, of course.
