I would be really greatfull if someone could clear up a fiew things for me
in relation to IFD.
These are the questions:
How are the lights created in IFD?
How can I rotate the geometry obgects and lights?
Is it possible to have more than one camera in IFD and how to rotate the camera?

Windows 2000 Pro
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Abit KR7A-133R MoBo
MSI GeForce TI 4600 128MB (SoftQuadroed to Quadro4 980 XGL)
Corsair PC 2700 XMS 512MB
Maxtor 40GB HDD
D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Adapter
This is by far the most bizzare thing I've encountered in Win2k!!!
At first, Houdini works fine. Than ,out of nowhere I'm starting to get this error.
Every time I restart or shutdown Windows, a dialog box appears saying
that “explorer.exe” doesn't respond and I have to force the shutdown
by pressing on “End Now” button. And that's when Houdini stops working!
Everything else seems to be working and only Houdini is being affected.
When I try to start Houdini, only the splash screen and in the lower right corner of the screen Houdini Console appear for a sec and that's it.
Can't start the Lisence Manager ither.
I thought maybe one of the programs that I've installed lately screwes up
something therefore, I reinstalled Windows couple of times allready but every time, this waky beheviour would take place without any relation to any installed program. Every time, the last program I've installed would be
a different one.
Also, I've tried to just reinstall Houdini and it helps but only for a couple of runs. I'm able to start it once or twice and than it breaks again.
Did anyone run across something like this in the past?
I'm frustrated!

All right. I just reinstalled RH9 from the scratch. I thought that maybe because last time
I've chosen “Upgrade” option during the installation instead of clean install, something got screwed up.
So, this time I reformatted and did a fresh install. but… Since I've chosen a default installation
KDE was not installed at all.
I'm very new to Linux and all the …nix stuff so I really have no idea what I should do next, as well as what the Metacity is etc. Could you help me out here, please, if you have some spare time.

All I was able to find is that I should use KDE to run Houdini, but THAT IS what I use and
I'm still getting this error.
I also do, set the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL variable to 2.4.1 before
I try to run Houdini.

When I try to start Houdini I get this error
X11 Error (3): BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
and Houdini doesn't start.
Anyone knows what the problem is?
PS.
I've just upgraded RH7.3 to 9.0 and reinstalled Houdini replacing the old installation which was
compiled for RH7.xx with the one that is meant for RH8.xx

All right.
I'm having trouble with loading my desktops.
Here's how I do it. I open a hip file, then go to Desktop Manager
and Add New Desktop, rename it and move it to a $HIP/desktop.
Newly created desktop is being shown in Desktops menu.
I switch to this desktop, customize it, save it, save the file and exit Houdini.
Next, I open the file by doubleclicking on it, go to Desktops menu…..
my desktop is not there! I go to Desktop Manager to check if the desktop is there, and it's not.
Same thing happens if I open the file via File->Open in Houdini.
Another question.
I have a 10 desktops in $HOME/houdini6.1/desktop but only 8 of them are being shown in Houdini.
Why?
Thanks!

I have a desktop which I use in only one project. One of the panes
in this desktop is set to show ebedded browser which in turn has an PDF document loaded in to it. The question is, how can I force this PDF to be loaded every time I switch to this desktop? Currently, it shows the home page.
Another question, is it possible to somehow use Houdini Variables in
the embedded browser so I don't have to type in Cblah, blah, blah
every time. Sometimes the “blah” part gets very long!

Technical Discussion » Directory structure for VEX

Hi everybody.
I'm a little confused by the info in Shaders.pdf file concerning the
VEX directory structure. I suspect that the whole concept of creating and
storing of custom shaders and VEX operators has changed but the info on
how to do it the old way hasn't been removed from documents.
The thing is, I like doing it the old way! So, I created vex and shop directories (with all the rest of the
directories inside them) in $HOME/houdini6.1.
Created all the index files and pointed them ….. well there is nowhere to point
them to so now, as a resault, every time I start up Houdini, Console
comes up stating that the files to which index files point do not exist.
Anyway.
My question is… is there a way to go about this the way it used to be?

A tip from stevenong
RH9 is not supported and also the threading model is different.
To get Houdini running, you have to set the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL environment variable which is a Linux specific variable.
setenv LD_ASSUME_KERNEL 2.4.1
Good luck!
Cheers!

It is definately Radeon!
I have the same card.
Try and set HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE variable in Windows. Set it's value to 1. This will force Houdini to use software OpenGL rendering instead
of your videocard. Certanly, you will loose some prformance but at least
Houdini will become way more stable.
Cheers.
