I've just invested in an amd 1090T 6 proc machine, with 8 gig ram and an ATI FirePro V7800 graphics card, windows 7 HP. Imagine my surprise when I got problems with the graphics. I think I'm up to date with GPU drivers, at least I can't find any more recent than I have. I'm using H11.1.67 64-bit.
The symptom is when I go to use say the edit sop the camera window goes blank, or if I hit “w” it'll shade and come back, but flicker when I enable viewport picking but not let me pick anything, other manifestations have been the clip for the ‘inspect’ camera cutting my scene in half, or obscuring it altogether. I had similar, but different problems with my old computer (nvidia 9600GT) so is it a bug or are my OGL settings out of whack?

I have a .obj file which has about a hundred layers (with not very good naming convention) is there a way of splitting up the sep layers/groups as files and then reading them back in?
Houdini Indie and Apprentice » copyright symbol in font SOP

How do I generate a copyright symbol in the font SOP? I'ev tried to cut and paste but the field goes red and refuses the symbol - happy to take any cut and paste type, bit not the copyright.
I've had to model one, but is there a way of doing these alt symbols?

Technical Discussion » mixing image resolutions - file cop

I might have posted my other post in the wrong place, so here it is again:
I have a sequence of images that are of different resolutions (HD and tests at 1/4 HD) - houdini seem to crash whenever I file read sequences of different resolutions - I can see mixing sizes isn't perfect, but does it need to crash everytime? can't the viewer / file cop switch between sizes?

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » compositing different resolution images

Posted this before, but it's still happening.
I've been test rendering HD 1920 x 1080 images, obviously I test at a lower res and do my composite. The comp is too complicated to duplicate for different resolutions, but the file cop doesn't seem to like mixing images sizes.
Has anyone noticed if you import images through the file cop that are of a mix of resolutions (I have some tested low res and some finished HD) houdini crashes? I can see mixing image sizes in one file cop could be problematic, but I don't see why houdini can't switch between sizes without crashing…..

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » frame offset

I tried the procedural text tutorial and couldn't get it to work, so I did this:
font
sort by x
delete unselected
xform (animate) about centroid
merge
then copy and paste the delete and xform, delete the next letter, grab the channels and shift them up a frame or so.
Is there a chops way of taking the first xform channels and offsetting by a number frames, I don't seem to be able to figure this out. Or would I have to do a foreach thing like Adam Swaab's demo?

I'm thinking of animating a WW1 tank over trench terrain, which given there's little in the way of suspension should be fairly straightforward, but I though there was a catippilar track interacting with bumpy terrain tutorial somewhere - anyone know where, I've looked and looked. If not any solutions, putting treads over wheels is fairly easy but driving them over terrain needs some trickery….

Houdini Lounge » compositing with differing resolutions

I posted this in technical too, but no replies…
I've been doing tests of the same sequence at different resolutions, HD, 1/2 HD, 1/4 HD etc, but the compositor crashes when I thumb through and a frame of a different resolution is encountered. That is I have sequences at different resolutions and playback is quite happy until it encounters a frame with a different res than it started with and crashes. Fixes?

I haven't looked around so this might be a known bug but I've been rendering and testing HD, and as sequences of files have ended up in different resolutions, that is frame 1 might be 1920x1080 and frame 2 might be 960x540 - I've had numerous crashes both in comp sessions and rendering.
Is there a solution, or is it that houdini dislikes mixed resolutions within sequences of files? And if it's not fixable is there a way round, as I'm doing many passes of tests both 1/2 and 1/4 as well as full and it's not always possible to get a whole sequence in one res, other than a new directory for each render and comp….

I liked the old way, hitting interupt would stop the AFTER the current frame had finished. I also like the new way, stopping the render instantly.
Can we have it both ways? A button to stop instantly and a button to stop AFTER the current render?
And what does ‘pause render’ do? In my weird mind I imagine it's pauses the render, freeing up your CPU to do something you forgot and when you un-pause it goes back to concentrating on your render. It just seems to pause with all CPU's still thinking about the frame….

Technical Discussion » anisotropic shader

I had hoped the ‘brushed aluminium’ shader would give me an anisotropic look, but although it mimics this - the highlight and colour look right - you don't get any anisotropic-ness. Can Mantra achieve this, I don't seem to be able to locate a ramp UV which maya uses to make this kind of shader.
Any suggestions?

If you haven't already found it here is a useful and not-too-expensive tool:
http://web.t-online.hu/karpo/ [web.t-online.hu]
I only discovered the other day that it converts from say 3ds to houdini, it supports .bpoly .poly .bgeo .geo and many, many more.

I'm using H10, wanted to do a spinning coin, render with mantra, check the allow motion blur box, center blur, sample frames set to 5, no blur. Changed animation from geometry motion to object motion, still no go. Loaded a file made with H9, motion blur render was fine. Any suggestions, is there a new otion blur option somewhere?

There was a post a while ago about the license server having problems with core 2 duo multi-core procs, is this still an issue and is there any difference between Intel and Athlon?
Also I've been bringing in a wav file and modifying it in chops and it seems to cause a hang or a crash EVERYTIME I scrub through animation/sound, is this a known bug, or just so rare that no-ones noticed?
