you could easily put down a second color node to adjust alpha separate from color.
And as an aside, unless a company has asked you to learning Houdini 8 for them, it might be worth it for you to try downloading the latest version of Houdini 9. There have been a lot of changes since Houdini 8.

What version of Houdini are you using? My recommendation would be to put a box, uv map it, then subdivide and scale it up so you have a nice sky dome. Slap a constant material on it and use whatever color map you want. Be sure to go to the light linker and disable it from casting shadows.

You should consider looking at the poly wire node. It's typically a bit more useful with l-systems than putting the “shell” straight from the l-system.
You can put a skeleton (wires) out of the lsystem, then do all sorts of fun stuff like noise based on arc length, or wire simulations and then poly wire to give it thickness.

Mike, food for thought. You may want to try playing with the particle fluids in DOPs if you want a more liquidy look than you had in your pops->particle fluid surfacer test.

-Manual, is there one? Or is the start-up videos and the help on each node everything there is?There are plenty of videos available for learning in the “Learning” section of the website. There's also a lot more in the help docs than just the help for each node. But to answer your question. There is no printed manual that comes with Houdini.
-Poly modelling. It seems like I can almost never get the selection for the next operation rather than editing the current operation. If you press the “s” key or click the selection icon at the left of the viewport, you shouldn't have any difficulty with selecting things so that you can then use the shelf/tab menu to perform your next operation. Note that if you're laying down nodes in the network editor rather than the viewport, you do a operation -> selection type of workflow instead of selection -> operation
-Particle size. The ‘balls’ that particles start out by default as are ok, and I can turn them into points, but do they have a size parameter, and if so can you then use that to make them collide with eachother based on that size…I'm not sure of what exactly you're doing with your balls  but if you're in a geometry network, you can try using a point sop to control the particle scale attribute. You can use the interact pop to make particles interact with each other.
-Render speed. My experiments have led me to believe mantra is pretty slow, at least in comparison to modo. How do you turn on ‘gi’ like in other apps. Grey environment, gi on, nice overcast look….I've yet to use Modo, so I can't comment on comparisons. There's a couple of ways to do GI / occlusion though. You can use an environment light (simple way) or the VEX Global Illumination shader (you should look up that one in the help docs since it's not as straight forward).

Fluids have their uses, but are also used in many instances when they are overkill. Unless you require fluidic motion, you are typically better off trying other methods.
In this case, you could probably get the look with a sphere emitting particles with lifespan. A bit of variance on their emission so that they go off in a cone shape. Use a color pop to control the alpha based on the lifespan, and you could probably layer this to get the different colors, or use some fancy expressions to do it in a single pass.

why fluids?
Particles, would (in my opinion) be a better solution for something like that.

if you load your cross format image into a compositing network, using a file node, you can place a gamma node after it. You'll probably want to set the gamma to 2.2
then save out your network as a .rat file
then use isixpack though the commandline tools to convert it into an environment box type image

Serg
Edit:seems to me that Materials are really only intended for object level assignments since there parameters can be promoted without duplicating the material itself. If this is correct I understand a bit why it is the way it is, but then you might as well remove the Material SOP… something not right here.
You know that the material sop also can do overrides, right?

For what it's worth… there's a full length episode of the Hypnotoad Show on Bender's Big Score.
Very engaging!
