i haven't 3ds max but normally fbx should work.
what you can try is the export with a older fbx version.
just as a example the maya 2014 fbx export is not equal to maya 2013 fbx export. it gives me always at the bones different result.

the tutorials for houdini 12 particle system are absolutely fine because most of the concept can be adapt to the houdini 13 particle system. to learn theme is not a waste of time.

small question. did sidefx know that you make a crowd system? because there is a comment on the orbolt request list under the crowd request. if not then they cook something.

So Houdini Indie users are forbidden to use Octane render ?SreckoM
Even it might be possible to make 3rd party render to work with Indie, that is not allowed. Indie can not be used with 3d party render engines AFAIK.
At the moment it tells it doesnt work with third party renders but in the license agreement i haven't found a restriction (it was a quick search). so it could be fine or sesi will add a third party render support license.

if the interest is there i can make a proposal with mockup's.
the reason is when there is a wishlist with over 170 post it gets hard to get all the wishes in a solid route.

i have seen that the H14 will support the Intel GPU. somewhere in the forum there was a post from the developer why it wasn't working nicely with osx and some other stuff….

you can try this:
have you try the scale to Unit length in the Collada importer till you get the correct Units? (File > Import > Collada….)
or
put your camera and plane into a subnet (Shift-C) and scale the subnet till it fits.
there is also in the Preference the units where you can change but i'm not sure if it's the way to go.

the FBX and Alembic support is only available with houdini indie and up.
the only other method is to export as a obj sequence and import it with a script in to maya (obj sequence importer). it works but it will be not a pleasure to work with.
Information: the export works only for fluid and not for smoke.
if you rely want to work pain free get a houdini indie.

the license is per workstation.
when you have a workstation with different operations systems you can use the same houdini license but you have to take care about the system name. otherwise it wont work.

when you only want to have 32gb ram you could make one system for just simulation and rendering and one bigger system where you work on and with more ram, cpu…..
for 1000$ you can build a system with the intel 4790K, 32GB Ram; SSD Storage.
the rest of the 2500$ you can use for a workstation with the 2011 socket and at least 64gb ram.

delete in you user folder the houdini folder and restart houdini. i had that some time ago on linux the reason is that something prevent houdini to generate the icons.
