and by the way by fractal geometry i meant something like a mountain or landscape. i know that houdini has a fractal SOP and Mountain SOP which will do the trick but i was wandering if it is possible to use l system to do that.

i tried Bound Sop. that is the first thing that comes to mind but can you then move the object without the bound moving? i tried but couldn't do it. i want the object to touch the boundry and take it's shape like the pic above.

WOW  are they all made using the L system? do you know how exactly they are made?

thanks for answering
1. but fractals i meant fractal geometry. i want the result to be some kind of surface not a bunch of lines.
2. metaballs look interesting and in the help it is written that it can be used to prune as you mentioned but how? i used the copy SOP to copy a metaball to points of an l system but don't know how can use it to prune

3. clean works too. but it doesn't eliminate very close one's. just eliminates points which are in the exact same position. thanks
any idea for th second question?

1. i couln't use facetSOP for that. are you sure it can smooth the object? what i understand from the help is the exact opposite.
houdini help facet sop: “Cusp Polygons: Creates hard edges between adjacent sides.”
but thanks ragupasta cause apperently mantra does the auto smoothing automaticly (am i right?) and i was wondering how to harden surfaces and facet does that.
how can i turn off the auto smoothing?
2. i want a boundary or border around my object which won't let the object inside it move out of it. like the picture. if you worl with creep you'll get what i mean. but the problem with creep is that it just bounds the object in 2 dimentions and it is projecting not bounding.
3. yes Fuse is what i was looking for. thanks Dan

Hi everybody.
1. how can i smooth a geometry in houdini without adding new vertices to the object. something like auto smoothing in 3DS Max. i tried smooth node but it is not what i want.
2. How can i bound an object inside another one, so that when i, for example move the inner object, something like the pic below happens. creep can do this to some extent but it is not the exact same thing. any suggestions?
3. In blender you can select the whole geometry and then remove all the vertices that were very close to each other leaving just one of them–it was called remove doubles–. How is this done in Houdini?

Hi every body
1. how can i make fractal geometry in houdini? should i start coding? because i've heard fractal is some kind of l-system. can i use l system to make fractal geometry?
2. you have probably watched procedural forest- the intro tutorial-.if you add volume to the trees then they don't look right because they will interfere with each other. how can i solve this problem?
thanks

Hi everybody.
If you were to decide what the next tutorial for Houdini is going to be, what would you choose?
I myself would like general tutors on Shops and Chops.

Hi everybody.
i have had this font problem with houdini 10. if you look at the photo attached you'll get what i mean. i thought it is a bug or something. but even the 295 build has the same problem. any idea what i should do?
by the way i use nvidia fx 5200. win vista 32.
i don't have this problem with version 9.5 although i have two big red planes in my view port instead of vectors. houdini 10 has the same problem.
about these red planes: someone on the forum complained about the same problem and i thought it will be address in newer builds but it hasn't. so i am not sure if it is a bug or a compatiblity problem.

yes. that is what i meant.
and i think you are right about the reasons for that. and i thinkthe 3rd reason is that company really doesn't care about nonprofessional users.
what do you think?

BTW: i think considering these major companies is not that fair. they use nearly every major software we know. so just because they use Houdini TOO it doesn't mean Houdini is widely used.

i know that Houdini is widely used in many serious projects.
i think you kind of misunderstood me.
don't you agree that cgsociety.org has one of the biggest cg artist communities on the web?
you know they have this search thing for finding artists. and you can search artists by the software they work with. in the list of softwares there are softwares i have never heard of,there are those that are very limited and specialized like zbrush or shake, but Houdini is not in that list. and i have never seen a cg done in Houdini there.
and it isn't just this site. it's nearly the same everywhere.
so what do you think?

hi as we all know Houdini is not something that everyone will use. i think one reason is that there are very little CG done in Houdini. for example when you visit cgsociety.org which i think is a very big community you find practically nothing made with Houdini. and even in this site there are very few updates in the gallery. don't you think so? shouldn't the company spend some money on making some jaw dropping CG. or maybe i am wrong and ordinary artists are not the target market and the company should spend money on other sorts of ads which will affect pros, not amateurs. :?: :?:

Isn't it possible to make those modeling tools which exist in Maya in houdini using VEX? i have heard they are pretty powerful and are used to make new tools.
