As mentioned above, there was a bug fix, grab the latest release. The issue of locking data was just a suggestion that was likely unrelated. How to lock data in SOPs is dicussed in the intro to Houdini interface in the help, I believe…

Yeah, on linux I can repro this for a trivial example, I get render times of:
Render Time: 33.72u 0.38s 11.08r
before adding the refract layer. When I add it, it goes up to:
Render Time: 1:09.40u 0.52s 21.01r
after adding and stays that way after deleting the export and the extra layer on the ROP. Note that a restart ‘fixes’ it - it is arguably a bug, although I would be interested in the results of a non-trivial test. We output extra layers all the time and certainly haven't noticed a sudden huge hit on render times when adding them. This might be a ‘one time’ hit when exporting something other than RGBA, and the fact it hangs around for the rest of that session is either a quirk or a bug(even possibly by design for a reason we don't know).

Books for CG applications are dead to me(this doesn't include classics and basic non-GUI oriented books like the renderman books, Art of Digital Compositing, theory texts, etc. which are always useful). Not only are they out of date by the time they get to print, they're more landfill. I get really depressed standing in a bookstore and the stacks and stacks of Maya, Max, etc books just stare back at me, most of which are past their due date. I would recommend trying some of the online courses that are available, and of course the docs and tutorials posted here. There's a lot of material there. If there's a topic you think is seriously missing or lacking, feel free to pipe up and add your suggestions.
This isn't to suggest there's no room for more of those, just that I happen to think the format sucks.

Seems like a bad/corrupt install of some kind. I'd grab the latest cut, install, and before you start rename $HOME/Houdini10.0 to get a fresh environment. Something Bad might have been saved at some point in there.
Also, verify during the installation you aren't getting any error messages.

I got off my ass and submitted a bug report with a sample hip. And to clarify, there may be more than one behaviour. What the submitted hip does for me is lock up, not crash. However I seem to recall I was getting actual crashes with /tmp/crashlog files, but I'll keep an eye peeled.

I'll be honest, I haven't been doing a lot of COPs lately, but I did briefly last week on 64 bit linux, and it constantly crashed. While at first I assumed it was the new-ish OGL code, I made it go away by disabling multi threading. While that's not the best solution and I still need to fill out a proper bug report, you might want to try that if the OGL doesn't work. It may well be a combination of the two.

The file you posted isn't in any error state, so I'll have to surmise what you're doing on your end. The sphere in that hip is in fact a primitive sphere, not poly, so alter that in the sphere SOP before making a dentable object. Also, I assume you know you can't directly convert an RBD object to a cloth/dentable? You can use the Remove From Simulation shelf tool first, change the Sphere SOP to poly, and then create a dentable and it should work.

You might want to apply the information mentioned in this [sidefx.com] thread, it does sound like gfont is encountering a bad font, or worse, Win7 has changed something fundamental about font storage. Once done, you can also see if the OGL issue applies too.

Double-ugh…yeah, just tried it here and it's a huge difference, much faster. I understand the support issues that this can cause having it on by default and users trying out Houdini with old drivers getting a bad first impression, but this strikes me as something so important perhaps there could be a driver version query and use it automatically if the driver > <some version>?

You might want to pop over to odforce.net and do a search for ‘voronoi’ - the location based fracture asset that johner has cleverly built does a pretty amazing shatter.

You can lock SOPs, the button on the middle left of the node. That will lock the data into your hip file, making it get larger. Not sure that's the reason, just the first thing that occurred to me.

Odds are you are locking some SOPs - locking a SOP means the data gets saved to the hip file.

Things have changed since 9.1 - go to the main journal online and search for ‘help’, the entry from May 20th covers the new startup procedure. I haven't actually tested local pages yet, although the server runs fine.

I fear it might be your hardware setup, I don't get this on Linux. However, you might want to upgrade first (running 10.0.308 here). It certainly sounds like an out-of-video mem or ‘I’m sorry I'm running an old driver please kick me to redraw' sort of thing, but you never know.

I realized after posting…custom format…doh.
Errr, it goes without saying there's been an RFE for a while getting this officially shipped with Houdini so I won't belabour that…but I'm curious - what's the dealio with the format - is there some sort of licensing issue? My understanding is dpx is sort of a parent of cineon, as far as family of formats goes. I think as an end user I'd be super happy with just getting the basic image layers for starters(altho time code seems to be the most common metadata being used out there and would be a bonus). All the constantly changing metadata is nice, but not critical for starters.
Cheers,
J.C.
P.S. Yeah that would be great if sharing is a possibility once you get things up and running Mark, thanks!

If the tracker supports Houdini, output to a file. More than likely it will be a ‘cmd’ file. In a Houdini session, open an hscript window(Windows/hscript textport) and ‘source foo.cmd’
