Hey,
This sounds like you need graphics patches from SGI. What version of Irix are you running? Theoretically any version of 6.5 should work, but 6.5.11 or higher is recommended. Also, if you have a newer graphics card in the machine, you likely need graphics patches to address this issue.

Technical Discussion » Error Message With Certain Sample Files

Hi,
Those errors are just the result of loading an old file into a newer version of Houdini, some of the example files are from 4.0 and haven't been updated. They still work fine for the most part (except anything using Materials or TOPs) and you can safely ignore those messages.
Cheers,
PEter B

Technical Discussion » Shaders in mantra3 and mantra

Hello,
Mantra3 uses the old Material editor, which is now very outdated and inflexible. Avoid mantra3 if you can. The only reason I know of to use Mantra3 is for lens flares, so if you need those, you're better off just rendering the lens flares with m3 and then comping them in, and rendering everything else with mantra.
Cheers,
Peter B

Hi,
We can only certify cards that the manufacturer sends to us and is serious about rapidly improving the drivers on. Your best bets right now are ATI (FireGL not Radeon) and Nvidia, they have good drivers and are committed to supporting Houdini.

Technical Discussion » Python scripting in future build of Houdini Apprentice

Err, you guys know that you can use any language you want by using the “hcommand” and “openport” combo, right?
Basically, in Houdini use the textport command “openport 554” where 554 is any number (do “help openport” in the Houdini textport for more info).
Then, you can use the command “hcommand 554 opls” to access Houdini from “outside”. So, in your Python script, do whatever the command is to call an external program (in Python) using “hcommand 554 xxx” and replace xxx with whatever Houdini command you want. That's it! That's why Python isn't embedded anymore, it's not needed to be embedded. You can program in Cshell, Python, VB, Fortan, Pascal, C++ or whatever the heck you want

Hi,
Have you gone through the texturing tutorial videos, plus the VOPs texturing tutorials? They cover applying multiple textures to the same surface. Basically, a Layer SOP, followed by a UVProject or UVTexture SOP, then use Layered Surface SHOP shader or custom-made VOPs if you need that flexibility.

Hey,
You don't need to install TCL/TK for Houdini, it's built into Houdini already. Just run “tk” in the Houdini textport and there you go. It is an older version (around 8.0 I think) but perfectly fine for almost anything you want to do.

Technical Discussion » Uninstalling Apprentice from Redhat 8.0

Hi,
You don't need to do anything special to uninstall Houdini on Unix systems, just delete the directory it was installed into (/usr/hfs5.5 or wherever you installed it). The license tools are in /usr/lib/sesi and there is a script installed to /etc/init.d that you can delete or leave, it doesn't hurt anything to leave it.
In your diagnostic, there is no license server running, which means that you either didn't install the license tools (check in /usr/lib/sesi) or it's not starting for some reason. If it's not starting, try re-installing the license tools.
Please note that Redhat 8.0 is not yet certified for use with Houdini, we have had reports of problems.
Cheers,
Peter B

Hi Nicholas,
It's the Nvidia drivers. Get new ones ) You can try turning off overlays, but that's unlikely to do much. It's in an environment variable, in a command-line prompt run “hconfig -h” and that'll show you everything you can set.

Hey,
Just put a Parameter VOP where ever you want to output a deep raster, and turn on Export. The name of the parameter is the name of the deep raster variable in the Deep Raster tab. That's it!

I actually use 3 fps and that's fine for these tutorials. Saves a huge amount of space. I also use 8khz sound, fine for a voice, crappy for music )

Hi Jason,
Interesting idea, but since each edited tutorial, in Camtasia format, is ~150megs, I doubt too many people would be keen to host it Unless you're vounteering Odforce for several gigs of download bandwidth?

HI David,
In addition to what Steven suggests (which should clear it up) you can turn on Primitive Normals, hide most of your model, then check out the areas that are causing problems. If worst comes to worst, you can use a Reverse operation (or many on the offending polygons.
I am an old Lightwave guy, and as you've noticed, Lightwave double-sides everything (but restricts you to quads or triangles for SubD stuff) and gets around the problem… I find that in Houdini I have to lay down a few Reverses to fix up troublesome polys, but it all comes out fine in the end… Your model is looking cooler and cooler, btw )
Cheers,

Hi Dan,
What's the exact model of the graphics card? Also, are you able to get the command-line version of HOudini working? Instead of “houdini” type “hscript” (without the quotes of course) and see if you get any error messages. It could be a licensing problem. When you installed did you connect to the 'net and get the license automatically?
Cheers,

Hi David,
How do you get a job using Houdini and modelling? Send your reel and resume to all the big shops here in L.A and highlight your Houdini experience, especially modelling (good Houdini modellers are rare, since Houdini 5 was the first time Houdini had serious interactive modelling tools) and then hope they're hiring.
Another tip Most shops only hire at the start of a project, so keep yourself aware of when shops land projects etc. There are websites like VFXpro and cgchannel that often post this info.

Peter B

The Linux on Mac thing wouldn't work, since Mac's use G4 (or whatever) CPUs and Houdini is compiled for i386 on Linux, meaning you have to use a Pentium or Athlon. Sorry!
