Hey,
YOu can safely ignore that, it's a very minor bug, it's a result of the changeover from the old COPs to the new Cops2 (aka Halo). Just minimize the console and forget about it )

Houdini Lounge » How to set a .aiff sound file play at a particular frame?

Hey,
If you use CHOPs, load the file (on Windows you can use .wav too, btw) then use a Copy CHOP and feed in a Pulse chop to the left side of the Copy. Wherever the pulse is, the sound will play! There is a tutorial in the Legacy section that shows how to do this, “chops_intro1.pdf” and you can replace the Trigger with a simple pulse or Constant CHOP.
Cheers,
Peter B

Hi,
There are two things to do Make sure your Fstop is set much higher than a real camera (around 100 or so works nicely) and then turn on Depth of Field in the Output driver for Mantra. Also, the quality is directly affected by the Super Sample value in the Output driver, higher is better (higher than 8x8 has no effect though)
Cheers,
Peter B

Hi,
Further to this, please be aware that the Materials pane and technology is old and will be completely gone in the next release of Houdini. The tutorials that reference Materials (and TOPs and the “old” compositor, Cops) are ‘legacy’ materials that have yet to be converted to 5.5. So, we recommend you run through all the video tutorials and .pdf files on the Apprentice CD first, and only then approach the Legacy materials on the website.
Cheers,
Peter B

Hi Nirsul,
actually, ATI has Houdini and actively test Houdini, but there are so many card/OS combos it's hard to test them all. Your feedback to them would be very helpful.
You can turn off OpenGL on the card by setting the environment variable
HOUDINI_OGL_SOFTWARE 1
It will be much slower, but should be much less crashy until ATI gets new drivers out.
Cheers,
Peter Bowmar

Hi Nirsul,
In fact, the problems you are having are a result of using the Radeon 8500 video card. Sadly, the ATI drivers are not fully compatible with Houdini. Try downloading the latest drivers they have available, and if you still have problems, please email ATI and ask them for newer/better drivers that are Houdini compatible. We work with ATI to help them get their drivers more compatible with Houdini and if you are able to let them know where you have problems, that helps a lot too!
Glad you're enjoying Houdini!

Hey Dean,
If you're using old Cops, just do some Over operations onto a black colour that's the correct size. In Cops2, similar, but use the Layer Cop.

Hi,
That's very odd. It appears to be a bug! I just tried it and you're right, I get black. Strange, when I did that tutorial it worked fine ) Ah well. You can replace it with Reflective, that works well.

Hi Michael,
I don't recall the Nvidia options offhand, however if you read the install doc that is on Nvidia's website, they mention the ones that you need and don't need. I don't add any others except
Option “NvAGP” “1”
which apparently gives a performance boost. However, if you find your machine locking up then remove it )
If Houdini's tiles pan and zoom quickly and the viewport gives you a fast tumble with 50,000 polys or so, then you're set! You might have to turn off Draw Lines Smoothly in prefs, some Nvidia cards don't have hardware anti-aliasing.

Peter B

Hi David,
This is because of the Drag n Drop. It's harmless and usually you can get rid of it by left-clicking in a blank area of the interface, like the background of a network.

Hi,
I have a GeForce4 MX at home and get the same problems, it appears to be a limitation with the GeForce game cards (the Quadro cards do not have this problem). You can manually work around it however, by opening the Display options for the viewport that is having problems, going to the Culling page and manually adjusting the clipping planes. Use the Middle Mouse number ladder to interactively adjust the clipping plane.
Cheers,
Peter B

I am getting some weird clipping in the 3D viewer. Portions of objects disapear and reapear in a fashion somehow based on their relative position to the veiwport. Usually only half of any object is visible at one time. I have tried changing all the viewport settings and nothing has any effect. This is a fresh installation of Houdini 5.5.26 apprentice edition. I am using a GeForce 2 MX 400. Please help!
Thanks

Hi Ryan,
Yes, versions of Houdini prior to 5.5.36 (the Apprentice version) are not compatible with XP due to bugs in the Windows code. We had to work around their bugs Anyways, you can use Windows 2000 or NT (sp6) without problems or wait until 5.5.xx is available to you.

I've installed houdini 5.046 on win xp with an Nvidia geforce 4 ti4200 with the latest detonator drivers. Houdini constantly crashes and I havent been able to enjoy the new version at all yet. In particular when I try to open oul houdini files -ver 4.035 it just crashes. There are some wierd video things going on as well. The some buttons were re-drawing themselves every time the mouse passed over them. I upgraded from a gf 2mx to avoid these video problems. I have tried disabling smooth line drawing and fiddled around with double-buffering and yet after a certain amount of time the H. still crashes. When did H 5.5 become available? maybe it has the solutions to my problems? -for now I dl the .96 upgrade and will try that. I may try to re-install the program again also. :?

OK, I've installed nvidia's latest Detonator 4.0 drivers, and I've noticed a nice little speed increase in Houdini. I'm getting phantom pointers though, about 20 or so pixels beneath my actual pointer. The phantom pointer is usually an elongated arrow, but sometimes there will actually be 2 or three different icons following the real pointer around. Anyone ever seen this, and know how I can get rid of it other than switching back to old drivers?
I can post a pic if it explains things.

Hi,
You can safely ignore this. A few sample scenes were not converted to 5.5 in time, these warnings just mean it's an old .hip file and it should still work, it's just missing the old renderer (which you don't want to use anyways

Hi there,
I just picked up my Apprentice cd's today. I have installed using the default configuration other than choosing to install into a subfolder on my F: drive instead of the default directory on C:.
Anyhow, when I load certain sample files from the second cd I get an error dialog like the one below.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Any ideas as to what is causing it/what I can do to fix it?
I am running Windows XP Pro.
Thanks in advance.

Hi David,
The .pdf files in the “Legacy” area are just that, legacy materials that have yet to be converted to Houdini 5.5. They are there as exploratory materials after you've exhausted the materials on the CD. I _highly_ recommend going through all the materials on the CD first (the 12 part Spaceship modelling video addresses a lot of your NURBs questions for example) then dive into the .pdf files on this website…
As an aside, as others have pointed out, the “history” in Houdini is radically different to other packages. Houdini was designed, from the ground up, to work with the nodes. I modelled a Daschund dog that had over 600 SOPs in it, and not once did I suffer any performance problems. The size of the .hip file was under 2 megs as well, and that was with full IK bone rig and shaders etc. There are many ways to deal with the many SOPs that are created
1) Ignore them, they really don't cause any problems and you have a complete, procedural record of your model. If you find the nodes confusing, you can select them and the Ctrl RMB and select Collapse to Subnet to organize them better.
2) Lock a SOP every now and again. This will keep the history without allowing recooking (if you're worried about that). The downside is that it does increase the file size somewhat (the “real” geometry is kept in a locked SOP so more memory is consumed, like other packages).
3) Delete the history.
Basically, whatever you're comfortable with )
By the way, if you find any areas of confusion in the video or .pdf files found on the Apprentice CD (not from the Web, we know some of those are confusing ) please let us know here on the forum.
Cheers,
Peter Bowmar

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the feedback. Quicktime would be great… except it only works on Windows (and Mac of course). Do you recall which particles video gave you problems? Also, did it keep playing after rebuffering?
It's my voice that lulled you to sleep, btw, unless it was a woman's voice, which would be Val )
