I'm running Houdini Indie on a new Mac Pro with Mavericks 10.9.5
I'm getting a lot of crashes where the whole machine freezes.
I'm not doing anything particularly exotic. Playing with POP/DOP's etc.
Is there anything I can do/look out for to improve stability?

You can set the Noise Type to ‘Original Perlin Noise’. This outputs noise with a range of -1 to 1, whereas Perlin Noise will output only positive numbers.

You can also use popforce dop if you want to avoid popvop.
You can also use VEXpressions there to contraol thing in your way.
Thanks very much guys.
I've used popforce, I just wanted to try out some different styles of turbulence.
Are certain types of noise just not suited to particles or is it a matter of getting a bit deeper into how they operate?
I tried subtracting .5 from the noise output and using a vex fit01 to adjust the ranges from 0 to 1 to -1 to 1 but with no joy.

I'm using noises/turbulence in Pop Vops. The noise patterns these push the particles towards the positive X,Y,Z.
How can I get the noises patterns to work so the distribution is even?

See the example file for a few of the methods explained above.
That is all extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make such a detailed response

Thanks. I think I just need to read up on this a bit. But I presume this is just an expression to grab the data from the Chop node and drop into the other network?

I have one Chop network driving the number of particles. In the same Chop node can I also drive the particle velocity? (With different values)
I can only Export from one node at a time it seems?
Or do I need to create a different Chop node for every channel/value I'm exporting to?

Ah, makes more sense now.
Turns out I can just replace the suffix and type .otl and it works as expected.
Thanks

Probably a stupid question but…
How do I save out an asset in the OTL format?
When I right click and save something as a Digital Asset it saves as a .hdalc
I'm using Houdini Indie 14.
Many thanks

tamte
then the simplest VEXpression you can do is probably
wind.y *= @P.y>0?-1:1;
I think it's the shortest not the simplest!
So this is a sort of shorthand notation?

This is perfect, thanks all.
I struggle with syntax, I'm a lot more use to Xpresso in Cinema 4D so semi-colons befuddle me.

I want my wind to react to where the particle are. So if they're below P.y 0 then it pushes them up and visa versa. I've got Vop Sop to work but not the code.
My Vex is:
if P.y = < 0 {
wind.y = 1
}
else
{wind.y = -1
};
and my Pop Vop looks like this:
Is it just a personal preference to use code or nodes? And what would be the best way to approach this?
Also would you generally use a Vop Sop to effect a Pop Wind or is the Vop Sop a replacement?
Thanks

I'm wondering how to get particles to inherit the velocity (at birth) of the source object? So it's as if the emitting geometry, were it to be spinning, would throw off the particle. They'd just drop if it wasn't spinning.
Thanks
Thanks

Thanks Jeff, this is great. I really appreciate the examples.
Presumably the expression method could be turned into a HDA but it'd just need some more work to create the correct interface?

I'm going through the First Steps tutorials (http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=202&Itemid=361 [sidefx.com]) and I've got to Particles which was done in Houdini 12. Is it worth getting my head around these or should I just look at the new Houdini 13 system?
I've just done this tutorial: https://vimeo.com/95644892 [vimeo.com] which is great but I like the systematic nature of the First Steps tutorials. (there's a lot to take in!)
Any tips?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm new to Houdini, coming from Cinema 4D.
How do I re-map values in an expression? In C4D it'd be a range mapper node (in Xpresso). Or in AE this https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/227/15487 [forums.creativecow.net]
Thanks
