Hi,
I did not start Houdini for some time and now I have the following issues:
- Flat Shaded and Flat Wire Shaded modes do not display the geometry
(e.g. Smooth Shaded does)
- When assigning a material to the geometry, also the Smooth Shaded mode does not display the geometry. It's like simply hidden.
I'm on the newest graphics driver and 13.0.443.. What could that be ?
Any input welcome !
m.

Hi ..
I have a group of geometry pieces that I unwrap. then, in a for each loop, I want to offset each piece's UVs by a random value with rand(1) in u and v.
But that does not work correctly. There is some random transformation going on, but not for each piece individually (that's why I assign it in the for each sop), but ALL pieces get the same random value assigned ('globally').
What could be the issue ?
Any input ?
Thanks..

hi ..
if I have any input mesh, e.g. a simple base mesh of a curved stone wall.
now:
what do you guys recommend to ‘add geometric details’ ?
I tried subdividing, polyBevel, mountain, .., but the default sops don't give me the control I search for.
e.g.
- subdivide linearly to quads (to a certain polygon size)
- quadrangulate mesh
how do you guys deal with this ?
are more such sops planned ?
any inputs welcome ..
thx !

Hi !
In Houdini, one often dives in an out of the same nodes, so I wanted to know if this could be streamlined with a little floating python gui, where one defines the ‘context locations’ (or in any node, subnet, ..), which then are represented as a button. Pressing the button would direct to this location.
This could also be done by defining some nodes as ‘targets’, that one wants to look at when pressing the button.
That would save tons of time navigating around ..
So first question .. Is there a python way to ‘set’ the current context/view ?
Any input welcome .. scripts too .. :wink:

I literally lost 1.5 hours searching for an answer to this ..
thanks for the help .. this obviously works.
I just wonder how in the heavens this all can be learned with just the standard docs that I find on google .. it's impossible.
thanks again.

I have tried several ways not, but I just can't get this to work.
I have calculated the volume of an object, now I'd like to use that value to scatter this many points on the surface of that object.
how can I get the attribute ('volume') and use that value in the ‘number of points’ entry in the sop that follows ?
any input welcome ..
m.
ps. is it also needed to cast float to int ?

hi !
thanks for the inputs.
by the second option, you mean:
fetch the content of the last nodes (e.g. NULLS) from outside the DA, right ?
and the node name to do this is called ‘Object Import’ ?
matt

Hi ..
I searched a bit for this, but could not find anything yet.
I am creating a digital asset for SOP nodes.
In the DA, I am creating
1] geometry
2] polylines
that I need to grab again outside the DA.
How can I add a second output ?
Any input welcome !

hey !
thanks for the input. this does exactly what I need. very cool !
but the expression with the prim() to check which edge is the longest .. I don't understand it's logic because it's somewhat nested code. can you explain that code ?
thanks again .. !

Hi ..
I'm trying to find a way how I can do the following:
I have a wooden board which comes into Houdini any way rotated, as an .obj file.
Now, I'd like to take the oriented bounding box for this board and scale along the OBB's longest dimension.
How would I do this ?
Any input welcome !

finally, I tracked down a way to do what I want (win8.1):
Create a .bat file that runs my script
“C:\Program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 13.0.401\bin\hython.exe” CUsers/User/Desktop/start.py
pause
in the script:
def makeSphere():
obj = hou.node(“/obj”)
s = obj.createNode('geo', ‘Sphere01’, run_init_scripts=False)
s.createNode('sphere','sphere')
makeSphere()
hou.hipFile.save(“CUsers/User/Desktop/test.hip”)
This creates the .hip file on the desktop.
Thanks for all the inputs !

Source your houdini_setup_bash (or csh or whatever shell you are using) so that “HFS” gets defined..
This is the part that confuses me ..
1] What does ‘HFS’ stand for ?
2] Is ‘houdini_setup_bash’ a script ? a shell ? an exe ?
If I have C:\Python27\python.exe open ( the shell ) and Houdini installed under C:\Program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 13.0.198.21, what would be the the steps to do what I quoted of your text ?
I did a lot of scripting before, but this is new territory .. Thanks for the help so far ..

hi ..
well, actually exactly the steps ‘before going to town’ are the issue.
how to set things up I had my issues with ..
any example on this would be much appreciated ..
let me know ..

hmm.. I played around with this, but can't get it to work.
is there anybody that may give me an example script with Python 2.7 that creates e.g. a hip file with a sphere and saves it on the desktop ?

Hi !
Let's say I have a houdini scene with a network that imports some data, processes it and exports it to an other folder.
Would there be a way to kick this process on via Python so that I don't need to open Houdini itself ?
Any input welcome !
Thanks !
