Hi!

Is there a method to render volumes (smoke, clouds etc) with hdri lighting and depth map shadows?

When I use enviroment light with hdri and set depth map shadows I'm getting white smoke without shadows

And raytracing is very very slow for smoke

Use a spot light or a directional light for the shadow casting part.

raytracing is always really slow with smoke (and a few other things), but you can turn down the ray samples in the Mantra ROP, as well as the volume step size, as a temporary fix.

Thank you!

circusmonkey - thank you for this solution

The only problem is that when I would really get effect like with real hdri shadows I have to use VERY large number of lights

Try experimenting with the Bake Volume SOP to scatter light in the volume.
There's at least one school like the old school!

volumes dont get shadow information from env lights.
