I don't know the answer to your question but a workaround would be to put a grid or line as a child object to your camera and exclude it from rendering. Then you can get any shape/aspect you want.

(perhaps if you look into“ …\Side Effects Software\Houdini 11.0.XXX\houdini\config” you can find a pref file for it.)
