While I am caching VDB for collisions with the extension .vdb when reading the cache, I get an error. As far as I know, this is the correct extension and it is also listed on Houdini's “Choose Geometry” window in the “Show files matching” list.

If I will cache it with .bgeo extension, I get no error and the vdb is there!

Can someone please explain me why is that?

cheers,
Christos

.vdb files are for interchange with external programs using the OpenVDB library. If you just want to save and load within Houdini, .bgeo is recommended since it preserves all the native information.

Having said that, I'm not sure why .vdb isn't working for you though. If you can reproduce, it's worth submitting a bug about it with a sample .hip file to reproduce. Remember to supply your OS info.

You should be able save VDB grids out as any of these: .bgeo, .vdb, .bgeo.gz. I wonder if something else is going on..
