URGENT! am I crazy? not able to select a single polygon

Jesus,

I've a box and just want to scatter the top polygon of it. I select it, it turns to yellow but as soon as I connect the scatter SOP the whole box is scattered. So is it to me?

you call the TAB menu in the viewport or in the network view??

you have to make sure your mouse hovers over the viewport and use the menu from there. it should work.

Just to be clear, you are successfully selecting a polygon/primitive when it is highlighted yellow.
