Anyone running Houdini Linux version in a virtual machine on OsX?

Looking to have a Linux version running to do simply tests in- no production work. So far getting crashes upon launch. I've heard that it's probably the graphics drivers but launching with the H11 viewport also crashes.

Unbuntu 13.04, H13.0.343 (houdini-13.0.343-linux_x86_64_gcc4.6)

Parallels Desktop v9, OsX 10.9.2

Seems like HW-acceleration just isn't quite there yet in Parallels.

No apparent problems with Ubuntu 13.10 in VMware Fusion 4. Viewports use OpenGL 2, but performance isn't too bad if you leave antialiasing disabled.

I haven't tried a recent version of Parallels, but it looks like all virtualization software has similar OpenGL limitations.

Houdini 13.0.343
Ubuntu 13.10
OS X 10.9.2
VMware Fusion 4.1.4

Ah - makes sense. I'll check out VMware Fusion.

Thanks!

Hi,

just wondering what's the benefit of this over the native OS X version of Houdini? Or is there a special reason?

Thanks,

No advantage really, just want to test a few things in Linux and keep my Linus skills sharp really.

I am trialling VMWare Fusion 7 (non-pro) on a MacBook (GeForce 9800) with OS X Yosemite and Ubuntu 12.04

hkey will crash when you try the “Manually…” menu bar, need to manually edit the license file to put the generated keys in the file system via sudo

houdini starts but crash due to what looks like OpenGL driver problem.

Anyone able to get houdini running on the above combination of hardware/vm and OS versions ?

To get it working, here is the temporary work around

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86070 [bugs.freedesktop.org]

It is a known bug in Mesa 8 and 9, until VMWare Fusion 7+ ships with Mesa 10.1 onwards, it will crash.

Cheers

Wow, I'm quite impressed at the mesa3d team on this one! Thanks for submitting the bug and working through to get it fixed!
