In the meantime, I'm open to any suggestions that don't involve point cloud lookups or manually “advecting” particles (or circumventing the pop solver in any way). Along the lines the manual suggested, I'm experimenting with adjusting the velocity and/or force vectors to always have a direction that won't cause the particle detach from the surface, but it's intricate business…
