Can you try with ‘Select Visible Geometry Only’ unchecked, that's the eye and cursor button a the top of the viewport. I'm not running AMD/OsX currently but think that might have worked before.
Another option is that you can boot the Mac in Windows/Linux with Apple's Bootcamp or ReFind if that suits.

or should I purchase a new PC?

I don't have your HIP file, but I created a similar scene. I definitely have a similar issue - 10.11.1 / Mac Pro / D500 machine.
It seems to work better if you select ‘select visible geometry only’ for me. But still does produce weird results once in a while (like selecting stuff outside selection rectangle).
Also, definitely an AMD issue; does not occur on my macbook pro nv 650m machine.

Actually this even happens on Linux Centos 7.1/H14.0.441 with Quadro K2200. Haven't tested out 15 yet.
These are the kind of things I'm worry about, Quadro K2200 is supposed to be supported. Before buying a new computer or graphic card, I would like to be sure that it is something related only to old drivers. Cheers.
