Instanced objects won't align to template's normals

Hello!
I am following the Halloween instancing tutorial from a few years back (https://vimeo.com/52551778) & everything was going well until Houdini crashed when I typed a point expression wrong. After I reloaded the scene, I had lost some progress. So I recreated 2 vop nodes to align the instances onto the template again (constant and align nodes, starts at the 32:00 min. mark in the tutorial). The problem is, for some reason the boxes don't align anymore…before the crash it worked fine and they rotated around the Y axis defined by the normals on the template geometry. I rechecked everything many times and it looks like the nodes are set properly so I'm not sure what is wrong… me, a bug, or a corrupt hip file. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

see attached…
Rotate an upvector that's obtained from the geometry itself. Should be very stable.
