Looks like you are running on a Mac, and I'm guessing using Intel integrated GPU? If so, that black shading is a result of a bug in the OpenGL driver which Apple has acknowledged, but has yet to fix. That bug is one of the reasons we had to remove Intel GPUs from the list of supported graphics cards on Mac (http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2680&Itemid=390). If you don't think this is the problem, please attach a file with the contents from the Help -> About Houdini -> Show Details window in Houdini.

I am running a MacMini as well. Just get used to the fact that the viewport is only a reference. I generally set my viewport to Flat Wire shaded on the MacMini and leave it at that.

Click on the Render View TAB then Render button to see your scene fully rendered. The IPR (Interactive Render System) is quite useful in these situations then you are really seeing what the final looks like. You can also just drag-drop materials directly onto objects in the Render view without having to switch back to Scene view.
